El Pollo Loco probing ‘Mary-Kate’ fender bender

October 22nd, 2008, 9:45 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

If you follow the celebrity blogosphere, you’ve probably heard that Mary-Kate Olsen and her friend got into a fender-bender with an El Pollo Loco delivery car earlier this week.

The friends, swarmed by paparazzi along Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, jumped into their car to escape after shopping.  But Olsen’s friend, who was driving, accidentally backed into the car parked behind her. According to video captured of the Monday incident, the car had an El Pollo Loco delivery sign on top.

In watching the video, I felt bad for the unsuspecting El Pollo Loco employee. She looked befuddled as a cacophony of camera clicks surrounded her. Clearly she had no idea what the big fuss was about.

So, how is Costa Mesa-based El Pollo Loco handling the celebrity encounter?

Spokeswoman Julie Weeks said she can’t comment because the Orange County chain is still looking into the matter.

“It will take a while to investigate the details of the incident,” she said.

Wow. An investigation? I wonder what that means.

I say Mary-Kate should make up for the fender-bender by serving the chain’s marinated chicken at her next Hollywood bash.  I’m sure EPL would love the endorsement.

You’ve got to like outfielder Torii Hunter already. When he decided to negotiate a $90 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the ballplayer agreed to wheel and deal at a Southern California fast food joint.

The pre-Thanksgiving meeting took place at a Del Taco in Corona, and was arranged by Angels General Manager Tony Reagins, according to Lake Forest-based Del Taco and a report in the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

“I drive the 91 pretty often,” Reagins told the newspaper. “Del Taco is one of my favorite fast food chains. I knew that one halfway between Riverside and Anaheim.”

After Del Taco learned that the deal was sealed during a clandestine meeting at one of its restaurants, the499-unit chain decided to deliver merchandise to the pair. (beanies, hats and gift cards, to be exact.)

“We sent care packages to Torii and Tony (in) care of the Angels’ staff who promise to deliver them after the press conference,” Del Taco spokeswoman Barbara Caruso said Tuesday.

The press conference announcing Hunter’s new Angels contract is slated for Wednesday. Read more about the deal at the Register’s Angels blog.

Tell us: Any guesses on what they ate? Comment here. I’m betting on the chicken tacos.
