A round up of food news and Fast Food Maven Tweets:

  • Thanks to reader Oliver for passing on the tip: Carl’s Jr. is testing a Grilled Cheese Bacon Sandwich burger at the 17th Street restaurant in Santa Ana. (@Tustin Street, next to Knowlwood burger.)  He sent me the (above) photo today. Carl’s Jr. spokeswoman Beth Mansfield confirmed the test, and made the point of telling me that the sandwich is quite yummy!  No news on when, or if , the grilled cheese sandwich will make it to all restaurants. (Updated 1:25 p.m. went out and bought one. read my comment below.)
  • Scripps Networks Interactive, the parent company of the Food Network, plans to rebrand Fine Living into “The Cooking Channel” network. (Eat Me Daily)
  • tb_cupcakes-460Taco Bell dodges cupcake story: LOL! Taco Bell declines to give Nation’s Restaurant News any info after I outed the chain in my Taco Bell selling cupcakes story.  How can they decline to talk about something that is clearly out there for public consumption? They did the same thing when OCMEX blog reported about the “authentic taco” sighting. I asked them about these products, and the PR team said they are NOT allowed to talk about product testing.
  • Review: OCR food blogger Jeff Overley reviews the eats at Haven Gastropub in Orange

Zagat zaps O.C. print edition due to poor sales

October 6th, 2009, 6:48 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

zagat-mediumThis time of year, I always look forward to getting my hands on the new Zagat guide for Los Angeles/Orange County areas.

The survey takes the “collective opinions” of avid foodies and compiles various ratings on restaurants based on popularity, service, best buy, food quality and decor.

For the first time last year, Zagat offered Orange County its own print edition — finally separating us from Los Angeles.

But this year, no Orange County edition arrived in my mailbox. Read the rest of this entry »

Habit Burger reveals first O.C. location

September 17th, 2009, 10:25 pm by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

12:46 p.m. updated

The Habit -- Could O.C. get the best burger in Santa Barbara?

The burger rivals In-N-Out, Five Guys

Santa Barbara’s iconic The Habit Burger Grill – known for its juicy ‘charburgers’ — said it plans to open its first Orange County restaurant near the MainPlace mall in Santa Ana.

The announcement comes a year after The Habit began scouting Orange County locations.  Since then, The Habit has moved its company headquarters to Irvine as it accelerates expansion in California. Last month, the 23-unit chain opened a new  restaurant in El Segundo, 311 N. Sepulveda Blvd.

During the holidays, two more locations will open in Norwalk (*12401 S. Norwalk Blvd.) and Northridge, on Reseda Blvd. just north of Nordoff.

An opening date has not been set for the Santa Ana Habit, located at the City Place shopping center at 2777 N. Main St. It’s the same retail/office center where Pinkberry and Mother’s Market operate.

In-N-Out settles suit against Chicago area copycat

August 5th, 2009, 4:30 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer
nickys

Nicky's logo violated In-N-Out's trademark arrow, the Irvine chain said in a suit.

Irvine-based In-N-Out Burger can claim victory, again, in another trademark infringement suit.

Executive Carl Van Fleet said the chain has settled with Nicky’s In-N-Out restaurant of Bronzeville, Ill. He declined to offer any more details about the settlement.

“The agreement in place requires confidentiality. We can’t discuss it other than to say (that) the matter has been resolved amicably,”  said Van Fleet, the chain’s vice president of planning and development.

In-N-Out filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Nicky’s on June 29.  In the suit,  In-N-Out accused the Chicago area fast-food joint of copying the chain’s iconic yellow “arrow” used in its logo.in-n-out

In-N-Out takes “great steps to protect the In-N-Out name and arrow as a unique brand to our restaurant chain,” In-N-Out attorney Arnold Wensinger said when the suit was initially filed. “Consumers have come to associate our In-N-Out name and arrow with the highest in food quality and freshness. We will vigorously defend our trademarks and trade-dress against any and all infringers.”

The chain has successfully defended its brand against other copycats over the years. In 2007, a judge ruled that Utah-based Chadders must stop using trademark In-N-Out burger names on its menu, such as “Double, Double.”

Free In-N-Out lunch on Sunday

July 4th, 2009, 6:48 pm by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

innout-burger_web.jpgI promised myself I wouldn’t blog over the holiday weekend. However, when it comes to free In-N-Out, I must stop and shout to the world.

Hardin Honda in Anaheim has hired the famous In-N-Out catering truck to give out free burgers to customers from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 5.
Address: 1381 Auto Center Drive, Anaheim.

The lunch giveaway is listed in a Hardin Honda flier I got in the mail. The truck was apparently at the dealership on Friday and today, July 4!

Drats. I should have opened my mail earlier!  Anyway, if you’re in the neighborhood, it might be worth a try to hit the dealership on Sunday.

Big SoCal burger chain to launch mobile food truck

July 2nd, 2009, 5:01 am by Staff Writer, the Orange County Register

The Redskins will be first try Johnny Rockets on wheels.

In 2008, we had the Year of the Froyo. Now, it looks as if 2009 will go down as the Year of the Meals on Wheels.

Savvy restaurant entrepreneurs are delivering Korean-Mexican tacos, gourmet ice cream and fancy cupcakes in mobile food trucks.

Now, joining the roach coach bandwagon Johnny Rockets.

The Lake Forest-based chain announced plans this week to build and sell mobile restaurant units. The first Johnny Rockets food truck will debut July 30 at the training camp for the Washington Redskins football team. The organization’s owner, RedZone Capital, is also the parent company of Johnny Rockets.

The truck is Johnny Rockets’ way of “thinking outside the box” when it comes to building the chain’s brand,  company spokeswoman Cozette Phifer said.

Each mini-burger truck will have a 22 foot kitchen and a 14 foot trailer. Each is designed to provide a condensed Johnny Rockets menu consisting of hamburgers, shakes, fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders and maybe even onion rings.

Phifer said a second mobile truck will launch soon in the Middle East. The plan is to eventually sell franchise rights for more “roaming” trucks, especially in California.

“We see this truck as being able to go anywhere, especially in Los Angeles,” Phifer said.

Although no deals have been signed yet in California, Phifer said local Johnny Rockets operators are showing interest in running a mobile burger van.  The chain is also considering using the vans for special events — similar to catering trucks operated by Original Tommy’s Hamburgers, In-N-Out Burger and Carl’s Jr.

“There’s endless possibilities.”

Once more get off the ground, the trucks will use social media platforms such as Facebook to let diners know where to find them.

With a passion for classic American fare, Ronn Teitelbaum invested $380,000 in the first Johnny Rockets diner in 1986 in Los Angeles. The eatery opened to snaking lines on Melrose Avenue and eventually became a cult hit with celebrities such as Bob Hope and Elizabeth Taylor.

Diners feature jukeboxes, red-vinyl booths and chrome counters. Servers sing or hum songs as they work and pour ketchup in the form of smiley faces.

O.C. artist designs In-N-Out tees

June 29th, 2009, 10:20 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

innout-teeEver wonder who is responsible for creating In-N-Out Burger T-shirts?

Turns out, the iconic Irvine-based burger chain chooses a different designer each year. And, for this year’s tee, In-N-Out selected Aliso Viejo software designer Michelle LaRae.

Her shirt design is a “virtual snapshot of an In-N-Out restaurant surrounded by vintage cars and servicemen in a post WWII moment in time,” says OCR writer and auto blogger, Matt Degen.
