November 18th, 2009, 12:01 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer
Six Dollar Cheeseburger cost $2.49, a $1.50 less than other Angus burgers

Six Dollar Cheeseburger cost $2.79.

In another smack aimed at McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr. will debut today a discounted Six Dollar burger that claims to be nearly twice as big as a Quarter Pounder.

Carl’s Jr.’s Angus burgers normally cost $3.99. But the new Six Dollar Cheeseburger will cost $2.79.

The price is the “lowest we’ve ever gone with the Six Dollar” burger,  said chain spokeswoman Beth Mansfield.  “It’s a big deal to offer it at this value.”

The Six Dollar Cheeseburger contains almost a half pound of charbroiled 100 percent Black Angus Beef, two slices of American cheese, onion, dill pickles, ketchup and mustard on a seeded bun.

Now, thanks to reader James, we know of a few more restaurants where the biscuits are appearing: Fullerton, Newport Beach and Laguna Hills.

mcrib mcdonald's comeback The McRib, which has been AWOL from local McDonald’s restaurants since 2006, is coming back.

Chain representatives confirmed that the McRib will return to Southern California Nov. 30.

For those who can’t wait, you might find a McRib in some restaurants now. Over the past 10 days, I’ve received emails from readers stating they’ve spotted the barbecue-slathered pork meat sandwich in San Diego area restaurants.

The unrelenting fast-food discount wars have left CKE Restaurants battle scarred.

CKE reported dismal sales for October. Here’s the financial report via Reuters.

CKE  same-store sales fell 5.4 percent, sending its shares down as much as 7 percent on Wednesday.

“Unemployment rates have continued to worsen while our competitors have escalated the deep discount burger wars. Both these events are having an adverse impact on same-store sales results for everyone including us,” Chief Executive Andrew Puzder said in a statement.

Comparable sales in October fell 7 percent for Carl’s Jr and 3.4 percent for Hardee’s brands.

Is McDonald’s considering a $1 breakfast menu?

Could the Egg McMuffin be headed for the dollar menu?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that McDonald’s is expected to launch a $1 morning grub menu in January — a move established to “head off” slowing sales at breakfast.

“The fast-food chain’s national advertising fund has ‘overwhelmingly approved’ backing the dollar breakfast menu with a nationwide campaign during the first six months of 2010,” WSJ reported late Sunday citing an exclusive document obtained by the publication.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud said Monday she could not comment on the breakfast rumors.

“McDonald’s does not comment on information obtained from unauthorized sources. Nor will we comment on rumors and speculation about our business,” Proud said in a statement to the Register. “Matters concerning the future of our business and internal discussions, are confidential and proprietary to the McDonald’s system.”

My take: It’s rare that the Wall Street Journal gets its stories wrong, so I’m inclined to think that a dollar morning grub menu might be headed our way.  Plus, McDonald’s needs to do something to boost flagging sales in the U.S.  On Monday, the world’s biggest burger chain reported a slide in October same-store sales in the U.S. It is the first time since March 2008 that McDonald’s has reported a drop in monthly domestic same-store sales, a key indicator of a chain’s financial health.

Tell us: What do you think? Have you seen any McDonald’s testing dollar breakfast items? What food items would you like to see on a dollar breakfast menu?

Chipotle & Olive Garden are top teen dining choices, survey says

November 5th, 2009, 6:01 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

chipotlelogo.jpgTeens picked Starbucks and Chipotle Mexican Grill as the No. 1 and No. 2  favorite places to eat, according to a restaurant survey conducted by financial firm Piper Jaffray.

Chain Leader restaurant writer David Farkus reports on the survey, conducted by one of the firm’s restaurant analysts. Besides Starbucks and Chipotle, other chains that made the Top 10 Teen Favorite list include Olive Garden, Chili’s, McDonald’s, Cheesecake Factory and Irvine-based Taco Bell. (Note: 16 was average age of those in survey; see full results.)

While some of these choices make sense, I have to question the sanity of our youth.

Wienerschnitzel’s new 99-cent menu boosting sales

October 27th, 2009, 6:27 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

der_value-menu

Wienerschntizel’s recent revamp of its value menu — where six items are priced at 99 cents — is giving the Newport Beach chain a long overdue boost.

Customer counts are up at Wienerschnitzel, which is facing tough competition from dollar menus offered at top burger chains such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King.

“With the economic times we’re in, the consumer is being stingy with their money, and the value menu meets their needs,”   said Tom Amberger, vice president of marketing Wienerschnitzel.

Here’s a look at what Wienerschnitzel is up to:

New Jack in the Box ads: the jail house visit & bowl cuts

October 24th, 2009, 7:09 am by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Just got my hands on the latest Jack in the Box commercials.  I don’t really get the plot line of the new Bonus Jack ads, but it doesn’t really matter. It is hysterical to see Jack Box visiting his disheveled jailbird cousin.

The other ad deals with Jack suggesting everyone in the office get  “Bowl Cuts” to celebrate the debut of the new Southwest Chicken Bowl. Read the rest of this entry »
