McDonald’s McRib returning to Southern California

November 11th, 2009, 7:40 pm · 48 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

mcrib mcdonald's comeback The McRib, which has been AWOL from local McDonald’s restaurants since 2006, is coming back.

Chain representatives confirmed that the McRib will return to Southern California Nov. 30.

For those who can’t wait, you might find a McRib in some restaurants now. Over the past 10 days, I’ve received emails from readers stating they’ve spotted the barbecue-slathered pork meat sandwich in San Diego area restaurants.

“The McRib is back in San Diego.  I just had one at the McDonald’s on Mira Mesa Blvd and the 805 fwy down here,” states reader Helen Mayfield. ” I just had one and it was really good.  It seems like they made it better.  The bun was much better than I remember.”

Another reader spotted the McRib at a restaurant in Oceanside.

The sightings appear to corroborate information posted on McRib locator, a rogue website that allows diners to post “McRib sightings” using Google map.

The site maintains that McRibs have been spotted in McDonald’s restaurants in Ladera Ranch, Irvine and Anaheim.  I could not verify the site’s information, as the map does not list addresses for each location where the McRib was allegedly spotted.

When I called the Ladera Ranch McDonald’s at 27612 Antonio Parkway, a worker told me they’d be getting the McRib on Nov. 16.  I also called all the Anaheim McDonald’s, and most said they did not have it “yet” but expected to start selling in the next week or two.

The McDonald’s McRib sandwich randomly pops up in restaurants across the nation each year. It often shows up around the holidays or winter months when diners are looking for a cozy hot meal.

The McRib hasn’t been available in Southern California since 2006.

Tell us: If you spot a local McDonald’s selling the McRib, comment here. Make sure you list the address or cross streets as many cities have multiple McDonald’s.

What is the price of the Rib Sandwich? As I recall..it was more than the Big Mac

  • JohnB says:

I don’t know if it’s the lighting, but the top picture looks like the new sweet dense potato bun version with fluffy pork patty, while the bottom picture looks like the old normal white bun with a meaty pork patty.

    • bpsqwerty says:

I didn’t really know a pork patty could be fluffy, so I’m not sure how to process that (no pun intended). and I think it’s the same bun, just from a different angle with brighter lighting in the bottom shot.

still undecided if I’ll eat one or just stick it in my freezer and stare at it until the middle of the next decade.

      • JohnB says:

A few years ago McD switched the pork patty into a sort of pork mousse, still molded into the rib shape, but with a very processed (finely chopped) light texture.

The old mcrib patty had a more meaty texture, like actual pork.

At the same time they made the bun heavier/firmer, using a potato bun that tastes sweet.

    • Helen did say that the bun seemed improved, so maybe it is different! Both pics look the same to me. The angle of the shot is different so maybe that’s what you are noticing.

    Where’s the McTofu?

Great post Nancy - I love the McRib!

  • Brian Perdue says:

I just posted it on Facebook!

  • chico says:

I thought the reason they discontinued it was because the animal they made it from went extinct. “Think smaller….think more legs.”

  • Wonginator says:

One of the worst tasting McDonald’s sandwiches ever, next to the McLean. I will continue to stay away from McD’s.

  • NPS_CA says:

    How High-brow of “all y’all”….

It’s fatty, it’s mystery meat, blah blah blah…

What you guys fail to get is some of the “healthy” stuff you eat is HARDLY healthy…

I’m 6ft; 170 lbs and have no health issues… I partake in whatever I want - in moderation. When I’m near full ; I stop eating… Something most people NEVER do… “Got to finish it all”…

So for me, the McRib coming back is a little nostalgic - and I WILL partake… no complaints from me.

why are they always in BFE? Fullerton are the only ones remotely close to central OC. sigh

    • jojo says:

Why are the Dunkleman Family (I think that’s how you spell it) so cheap they own all the McDonalds on Tustin st., 17th st. West Chapman, and State College at 91 and never offer good deals like the others do. I am up in Los Angeles quite often and they serve a large sweet tea for one dollar…go figure or at least jump on the boat.

    Hi,
I have to make a plea. My husband is a DIE-HARD fan of the McRib
sandwich!!! We live in CT, and I can’t find them anywhere. He’s
battling cancer, quit smoking, grieving the untimely loss of his sister,
etc. I can think of no better way of saying, “thanks for being in my
life” than surprising him with one!!! Do you know if any are nearby
(New England, New York…)? Is it at all possible for you to ship one
to me? I’ll certainly cover any shipping costs. Please let me know if
you have other suggestions. The McRib locator has been NO help. I’m
hoping to surprise him for Christmas (time’s a-wastin’). Any
suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated!
    Jennifer Gonzalez
