Could the Egg McMuffin be headed for the dollar menu?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that McDonald’s is expected to launch a $1 morning grub menu in January — a move established to “head off” slowing sales at breakfast.

“The fast-food chain’s national advertising fund has ‘overwhelmingly approved’ backing the dollar breakfast menu with a nationwide campaign during the first six months of 2010,” WSJ reported late Sunday citing an exclusive document obtained by the publication.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud said Monday she could not comment on the breakfast rumors.

“McDonald’s does not comment on information obtained from unauthorized sources. Nor will we comment on rumors and speculation about our business,” Proud said in a statement to the Register. “Matters concerning the future of our business and internal discussions, are confidential and proprietary to the McDonald’s system.”

My take: It’s rare that the Wall Street Journal gets its stories wrong, so I’m inclined to think that a dollar morning grub menu might be headed our way.  Plus, McDonald’s needs to do something to boost flagging sales in the U.S.  On Monday, the world’s biggest burger chain reported a slide in October same-store sales in the U.S. It is the first time since March 2008 that McDonald’s has reported a drop in monthly domestic same-store sales, a key indicator of a chain’s financial health.

Tell us: What do you think? Have you seen any McDonald’s testing dollar breakfast items? What food items would you like to see on a dollar breakfast menu?

I would like a $1 breakfast menu. Something simple..perhaps a McMuffin without the ham, oatmeal or a single pancake

  • Lucifer'sFlowers says:

Given the fact most of their sandwiches have shrunk while their prices have gone up, most of McDonald’s food should be on the dollar menu.

In the past, their food has filled me up. Now, a meal doesn’t.

    • JohnB says:

      McDonalds sandwiches HAVE NOT SHRUNK!

Rather it’s Americans expectations on serving sizes that have ballooned up.

As for value for money, If you adjust for inflation, the McDouble is an insanely good deal.

I was wondering what Nancy looked like from behind the burger :)

  • urdoo says:

$1 for a egg McMuffin isn’t too shabby.

  • Eric says:

$1 sausage biscuit would be something I would buy

  • Mike says:

This would be a great idea.

Last time I ordered a quick breakfast, I was a little shocked by the price. I bought just a plain sausage bisquit, no egg and a coffee. The price was like $4.70 including tax. Something like $2.70 for the biscuit and 1.75 for a coffee.

The menu only had prices for the combos so it was a little deceiving. Not that $4.70 is a lot of cash but come on. Its just two slices of bread and sausage. Coffee is almost the same price as starbucks.

Mcdonalds should offer a $1 coffee and $1 muffin of some sort even just plain egg would be cool.

  • I like the idea. I don’t think breakfast should be more expensive than dinner. I hope it happens.

  • Bunny says:

If they had a $1 breakfast menu, I would eat there early in the morning be4 class. They charge too much for a basic breakfast sandwich.

  • Linda says:

If they made egg mcmuffins $1, I would probably get one every morning. Or at least consider it, since there is usually a huge line of cars in the McD’s drive-thru by my house.

  • hahaha says:

This would be a great deal!! I loooove their breakfast sandwiches but they are too pricey for what you get…The best breakfast place on earth!!!!!!

    • hahaha says:

oh, and their hashbrowns cost way too much! YOur order can go from 3 something to like 5 something by just adding one of those things!

      • mike says:

You are so right on this. They really get you with the hashbrowns. I used to get a couple deluxe breakfasts for pretty cheap, you start adding extra hash browns look out. It started to get around $15. The coffee isn”t even included with the deluxe breakfast anymore. I usually don’t go to breakfast at Mcdonalds anymore because of this.

        • Bunny says:

no wonder they lowered the price on the deluxe breakfast. It used to be around $5. I have never ordered it.

  • mvmommy says:

my favorite breakfast from McD’s is the sausage biscuit w/egg (no cheese, please) and a large coffee and it costs $5.40 something.
If they can make that biscuit cost a little less, that would be great.

  • Megan says:

I love egg mcmuffins. Not so secret/guilty pleasure. I only eat them every once in a while though. Sausage mcmuffin as well…with hashbrowns oj and plain coffee mmmmmm. I hope they put it on the dollar menu.

  • justin says:

they’ve had $1 sausage burritos for a while. also a location i visited the other day was offering $1 sausage mcmuffin (with cheese, but no egg).

  • MacD Prices are Insane says:

Please MickyD do come out with a Dollar Menu for breakfast.
    Your prices are insane.
Like you should have credit applications on the counter.
These are hard times, in case you haven’t noticed.
Or are you just trying to keep the riff-raff out?
I’m on the road all the time and I have passed by MacDonalds a million times because I can’t stomach the costs of shelling out $3 to $5 just for a bite to eat to stave off the hunger for a few more hours.
If I did that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that would be at least $10 to $15 a day = or $300 to almost $500 a month.
When I stand behind people at a fast food restaurant and see their order on the cash register like $2 for coffee or a large drink plus$3 to five or seven dollars for some sandwich, totalling$6 to $7 or more, well, I rejoice that the economy is doing so well for them.
