12 ‘towering’ ounces of meat at Tommy Pastrami

The Skyscraper

The Skyscraper

Tommy Pastrami, which has seven locations in Orange County, has a “towering” meal deal for two:  The Skyscraper.

The sandwich reminds me of the gargantuan pastrami sandwiches we ate at Carnegie Deli in New York.  The sandwich was so big, we were full after only a few bites. We ended up giving the leftovers to the homeless.

The Carnegie sandwich will run visitors $22 ($25  if you want to split it with a friend.)

newyork_carnegieThe Skyscraper, by comparison, is a bargain.

For $12.95, you get a gigantic pastrami sandwich on a double baked Rye or French Roll, two 24 oz. fountain drinks and two pickles.  (Normally, this combo meal would cost $16.50). No splitting fee.

“Keep in mind that the 12 towering ounces of meat in the Skyscraper special is built for two people and is truly a great offer,” the Santa Ana-based deli chain said.

Also, you can select two meats (pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, brisket, turkey) of your choice or double up one meat.  The deal is valid through Dec. 15. at all participating Tommy Pastrami New York Delicatessen units.  (Locations)

Also new on the menu: The Sloppy T  — a flat bread sandwich stuffed with hot pastrami or corned beef .  ($3.50 for one, or two for $6.)

Tell us: Is the Skyscraper a great deal or too much food for two people?

If I recall, they sell their deli meat over the counter for take home. How much does 12 oz. of the pastrami cost?

  • Christian says:

Actually had Tommy Pastrami last night.

  • juicygurl says:

Sooo…Tommy’s or The Hat? I like their Pastrami Dip Sandwich.

12 oz is just too much food, even for two.

  • urdoo says:

Never tried Tommy Pastrami. Maybe I’ll give it shot, pastrami and corned beef please.

  • DiverDown says:

I ate here once and thought it was very good. I also thought it was a little too expensive.

  • michelel says:

The Hat gives you a good amount of food… but not so much its excessive. Its good to see a place that is not chintzy with the portion… but no wonder Americans are obese!

    • SoCo Dave says:

The Hat is to Langer’s Delicatessan as public school is to almost any private school. If you haven’t experienced considerably better, you’re probably reasonably satisfied. IMHO, The Hat sucks.

  • DanGarion says:

Looks like a smaller version of the “Woody Allen” I had at the Carnegie Deli in Las Vegas. 6 inches of pastrami and corned beef on bread.

“Looks like a smaller version of the “Woody Allen” I had at the Carnegie Deli in Las Vegas.”

Were Bowser from Sha Na Na and Arthur Fonzarelli there eating together?

    • bpsqwerty says:

smaller? hmm… maybe just a little. the picture sure looks close to that size.

but it’s Vegas, of course they’re going to make it bigger just to say they did (yes I know it’s really like that at the original one in NY just saying that’s why they import those kinds of places to Vegas!)

  • Rob says:

Interesting…looks good and I love a good (real NY style) deli sandwich on fresh rye.

    Thanks for the info Nancy.

  • mustangguy says:

I’ll take the Hat of Tommy’s any day.

  • mustangguy says:

I meant the Hat OVER Tommy’s anyday

  • JohnB says:

Try the brisket, it’s very good! The spicy dipping sauce really perks it up.

The pastrami is not so good, it’s extremely lean (dry, dull), with a exterior “painted” black instead of peppered.

Pity the pastrami is so disappointing considering the name of the place.

  • Roni says:

Tommy Pastrami is sooooo expensive. Meal for 2 recently was $29! I can spend less than that at a real restaurant. The food was okay, not great. The Hat beats anyone for pastrami.

  • Gretchen says:

Lord, how do y’all get your mouths to open wide enough to take a bite of those things? I loooooove pastrami sandwiches, but six inches is too much for me [insert off-color joke here].

  • PBateman says:

I ate at the original Tommy Pastrami location on Harbor soon after it opened. The owner cursed at one of his young employees in front of a bunch of customers, myself being one of them. I haven’t been back to that location since. I now go to the HB location if I need a pastrami fix and can’t get to Langer’s in LA.

  • KapaluaKeiki says:

I used to love The Hat for its pastrami until having one at Katz Deli in NYC. Once you have one you’ll be disappointed with the rest. I can’t wait to go back!

  • Jhstoneca says:

I like both Tommy’s and The Hat, but it’s Johnny’s on Sepulveda for the best pastrami/corned beef/etc.

  • Jake says:

I work across the street from the Tommy’s on Harbor and have only been there a few times. Each time has been terrible food and expensive.

A half a pastrami sandwich and a bowl of soup is $10.50. And I agree with JohnB. The pastrami was dull and dry. It’s not even a sandwich because you have to break it down just to be able to get it in your mouth.

  • aceofspades says:

It’s pretty awesome that the dude has to remind people it’s for two…

I don’t know. If only there was a Farrells Ice Cream place right near here… then they could gulp it down with 30 scoops of ice cream served on a stretcher….yummm!

  • alleykat says:

    That’s enough for four people!

  • LGT says:

Their breakfast is pretty darn good too.

  • cwright says:

i’ve got nothing against a good pastrami sandwich, but am i the only one that finds ginormous portions like this absolutely excessive and disgusting?

    • Rob says:

Read the story! It’s a special for TWO people including TWO drinks. I’m sure there are a few who can eat it by themselves and yes, that is disgusting…but I’m sure good!

  • Like Munt says:

Their pastrami needs some fat and some real pepper. I would rather go to any local Greek style burger/gyro/breakfast corner grill.

I miss Kaplan’s in South Coast Plaza.

  • OcSingleMom says:

I have enjoyed the brisket a couple of times. It’s so expensive, though (even if you share it…). I know, I know- all that meat isn’t cheap! But cut the meat in half, offer sliced pickles, onions, tomatoes? SO much more worth my time…

For the person saying they wouldn’t be able to get their mouth around it? I’ve seen people take a bite from the top, then take a bite from the bottom… just a suggestion.

Budgeting has had to be done lately and one place I am cutting back first is eating out. I’m happy making my own sandwiches and saving up for good italian or even a yummy weekend breakfast instead of buying expensive sandwiches with just meat between bread. =/

    • bpsqwerty says:

yeah. I am in my 30s, well employed and regularly make my own sandwiches for lunch with a side of chips, a fruit, drink, and a granola bar.

and I have so many coupons at home begging me to eat out and I won’t ever be able to use but a fraction of them. but they just keep coming anyway, which is never a bad thing.

  • Brian says:

I went to Tommy P’s about 2-3 months ago. I wasn’t impressed. The food was ok, but the price was too much.

  • elmomonster says:

I heart Tommy! I can barely finish the formidable girth of their Original sandwich. This is insane. Price is right though.

  • MV Mummy says:

The Hat and Tommy’s P have the chewiest, fattiest, pastrami you’ll ever sink your teeth into.
This is truly for the uneducated masses who haven’t tried Langer’s or any reputable Jewish Deli.
Even Jerry’s Deli has better meat product.
I guarantee if you eat this, you will find it “exiting” very quickly from your system, which wants to repel its wildebeast-like quality.to preserve your body’s health.
    Yuk!!

  • LR says:

If you want a real NY Jewish pastrami sandwich, go to Cantor’s on Fairfax. They make their own pastrami, pickles, etc and it is cheaper and as good as a NY sandwich

    • mvmommy says:

but it’s soooo far away! why aren’t there any good Jewish deli’s in South OC? Wait - there is one. I can’t remember the name of it but I think it’s over off of Moulton. Anybody? Do you know what I’m talking about?? OK - the name just came to me - The Kosher Bite. Anybody been there lately?

  • bpsqwerty says:

looks fantastic… I’d probably give in and pay $12 for that, in the right setting (meaning, not McDonalds or In N Out decor). couldn’t eat a whole one that size myself so it would end up being a meal for two. that’s Quiznos prices if you divide it in half, so it seems about right.

don’t know why I’ve never heard of Tommy Pastrami (7 locations in OC? really? are they new?) but I’m definitely going to have to check them out.

    I’m definitely a pastrami guy.

  • bpsqwerty says:

for comparison, the Rooster has a pastrami going for $6.49 if the prices I’m viewing are not out of date. Pastrami, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on rye.

but I’m sure it’s just “normal” sized.

  • marketbuy says:

How many Lipitor will I need to “neutralized” my LDL?

  • Greenman says:

I went to the Harbor location of Tommy Pastrami for lunch one time.
The sandwich was costly and not that good, and the service was some of the worst I’ve ever had.
    I’ve never gone back.

  • Don says:

I thought Tommy’s food was okay but too expensive. The counter person at the La Habra location was rather rude.

My favorite deli is Benjie’s on Tustin Ave. near 17th St. in S.A. The man that opened it in the 1960’s passed away and it is now run by his son. The quality has always been consistently good and the pastrami and corned beef is the best I’ve ever had. Lean but moist and flavorful.

  • Like Munt says:

You can beat the meat at Tommy’s Pastrami.

The pastrami they USED to carry (Carnegie deli) at Costco was better and more traditional.

  • tenyrslater says:

Now you’ve went too far, now you are in big trouble.
    I mean it this time.
