Starting Wednesday, Walmart said it will sell select 12-pound turkeys for less than $5. The announcement is part of a major chain-wide  holiday price slashing strategy.

“We’re proving that we’re committed to helping moms afford the holidays in these tough economic times,” said Jack Sinclair, executive vice president, groceries, Walmart. “That’s why we’re offering incredible pricing on the turkey and all the fixings.”

The retail giant said a complete Thanksgiving meal for eight can cost as low as $20 at Walmart this year.

According to a survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, last year’s average cost of a turkey was roughly $1.19 per pound. Beginning Wednesday, select Grade A turkeys will sell for 40 cents per pound at Walmart.

Tell us: Can you find a bird at a better price? (No gimmicks — like buy $50 in groceries and get a free turkey.)

With turkeys selling at $5 each…I will purchase hundreds and put them in the freezer for future use.

  • Craig R says:

This is good news and I agree with Cowboy. We’ll probably get a couple extras and put them in the freezer.

  • Andrew says:

Fresh & Easy has turkeys for $0.37 per lbs. The Walmart “deal” comes out to about $0.42 per lbs…

  • @Andrew - You’re right, but I was just at F&E and the average price ‘total’ for a turkey was about $6 to $8 … so, if someone just wants to spend $5 total and get a little ghetto ambiance WalMart it shall be.

  • C says:

Last year on the day after T’Day, Albertson’s was selling turkeys, any size for $5. Needless to say….yada yada yada….we ate turkey for a very long time.
But we got to experiment with them. I smoked a few of them and made pulled BBQ turkey sandwiches. Very good stuff.
A $5 deal is great. WalMart gets much grief, but you can’t beat their commitment to low prices. It just works.

  • RepublicansAreLiarsandThieves says:

    Are these Chinese turkeys?

  • porkchopbun says:

The $5 turkey is just a bonus for shopping at Walmart….

Oh god. It is amazing people like that are out there, just don’t care. But I think its unfair to walmart. I am sure that if you look around, you will find these people everywhere. At a local video rental store? Laundrymat is a good one too. The guys with super short shorts are the ones that bewilder me the most. Its not just “what are you thinking!?!” Its, “are you even thinking anything!?!?”

  • Don says:

A $5.00 bird? Must be a made in china! Need that walmart culture, makes me go home and feel good about my sorry life!

  • marley says:

Walmart couldnt pay me enough to shop there. They are slowly killing the economy and hire more illegals and pay some under the table, CROOKED and corrupt.

    • Not required says:

Get over yourself. Walmart is thriving without you! Bottom line, they are helping families make ends meet. Are you an overpriced grocery slider, a union rep or what? I have seen alot of my local Vons clerks in walmart with full carts!

    • Hunter Hearst Helmsley says:

Marley, can I take a guess and say you are… 70 years old? Crotchety and your joints turning to dust? So you hate everyone and are so racist you would put down people who are having a hard time and want to shop there?
Talking about the economy? How is walmart doing that? Maybe if you could do something useful, then you would not be so angry.
This story is about getting cheap turkey and not hateful unhappy, friendless people like you trying to bring everyone down. I have a great idea! Go live in Alaska with your best friend Sarah. There you can share stories about what you saw in Russia in the good old days where you told businesses how to run things. Commie.

    • Craig R says:

Approaching the holidays, your screen name of “marley” is fitting as it coincides with your scrooge like attitude.

    • hahaha says:

boo hoo Marley! I’ll just bet Walmart is gonna go out of business because you don’t shop there..Go and pay high prices somewhere else! I too see a lot of grocery store clerks shopping at Walmart. They know what’s up!

  • Hunter Hearst Helmsley says:

I can find a cheaper turkey. Go to a farm and shoot one in the face!
No in all seriousness, this is a great deal and probably only the first of many. We probably wont see any more deals until we get closer to the turkey day. Probably 2 weeks before.

  • Lady Tree says:

What in the world is a Fresh & Easy? We don’t have one of those in Lancaster, so we have to shop at Walmart.

  • Mimi says:

As Andrew said, Fresh and Easy has Jennie-O basted turkeys for .37 a pound. I’ve used Jennie-O for the past 2 years, and I think that it is the best tasting turkey you can buy! Very moist and juicy due to the Jennie-O basting.
Usually Ralphs will give you a free turkey with a $50 or $75 purchase, so if you spend more in one trip, pay separately and get 2 or 3 turkeys. Remember that even if you can’t use them, you can donate them to a food bank, a shelter, soup kitchen, or give them to friends or neighbors.

  • sylvia says:

Yes and I did donate a couple 25 pounders a couple of years….I get them when I shop over stores dollar amount so why not donate them:) and then eat with my son’s family at his house, which he also donates the extra turkey ….Out reach is always in need of food to help feed familys…:)

  • Lucifer'sFlowers says:

    $5 dollar turkeys?

What’s wrong with them? Are they overstocks from last year?

    Or are they Tofurkeys?

  • fullertongurl says:

just wondering- but how do you people have room in your freezer for extra turkeys?

  • Mimi says:

A lot of people have an extra freezer. It holds food that is bought on sale, like these turkeys, to save money.

  • fedup says:

walmart is the problem with our economy. they drive prices on some items so low no one can compete and other stores aren’t offered the same deals so they can’t compete. so you go to walmart and get your cheap $5 turkey and turn around and pay high prices for other items that is how they get you in the door. Have you looked at the price of prepackaged meat it is ridiculous and other items as well if you just used your brains!

  • Swooningmoon says:

Albertson’s turkeys are on special this week. Sorry, I don’t buy cold or frozen food at walmart. Can you imagine some cold food sitting on an aisle half way across the store, and some employee putting it back in the fridge?
    gross.
