The fast-casual barbecue wars begin today in Orange.
Beach Pit BBQ, which has locations in Tustin and Costa Mesa, opens its third Orange County restaurant today in Old Towne Orange. (see hours/location)
The Monday opening coincides with the grand opening of Lucille’s Rib Shack in Orange, a fast-casual version of Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ. (Preview: Lucille’s Rib Shack)
Beach Pit BBQ owner Tim DeCinces said he didn’t plan to open the same day as Lucille’s. That’s just the way it worked out. DeCinces said he expects the historic neighborhood to embrace his ‘cue chain, famous for its brisket sandwiches.
“I think it is going to be a great location for us,” said DeCinces.
Beach Pit BBQ operates restaurants in Tustin and Costa Mesa. The chain also has stands at Angel Stadium.
The Old Towne Orange restaurant will be open Monday-Wednesday 11 a.m. -10 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-11p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. (breakfast burritos and scrambles on weekends)

The website link you provided doesn’t list the hours. In fact, it only says “Opening Summer 2009″. Quite outdated. I am going to be in the area tonight and was thinking of stopping by for some dinner. I called and no one answered the phone. Can you find out what the hours are tonight and if they are actually open?
P.S. (for the owners) I called the main phone number since there isn’t an Orange location phone number listed yet and no one answered after several rings.
Calm down Craig R. it’s just a bbq joint…..jeeze….
Huh? I barely said much. I just thought the owners would like to know that when a customer calls the number no one answers. If that’s someone not being calm I wonder what sort of library-esque world yo live in.
And you’re hoping the sign is temporary???? What is wrong with you? Is it YOUR bbq joint? Have you seen the sign? Looks pretty permanent to me buckwheat! Go eat something and relax. You are 1 strange dude…..
You seem to be obsessed with me for some odd reason. Yea, I am hoping it’s temporary because it doesn’t fit with the rest of the area. And no it’s not my BBQ place, but it’s not entirely up to the owners. The area is classified as a registered historical area and there are strict rules on what can and can’t be modified on the facade of buildings in that area. Perhaps their sign passed the mustard test, but it still looks pretty garish compared to the rest of the area.
…that’s the funny things about opinions. We’re all allowed to have our own.
Thanks for the heads up. By the way the site’s time stamps are still an hour off because I’m posting this at 11:41am.
Might head on down for a bite right now.
Also, I’m hoping that sign on the front is a temporary sign. It’s rather garish for Old Towne. Old Towne is a registered historical district and I thought that there were rules on what you can and can’t do to the facades of the buildings.
For some reason I didn’t think it was opening this soon. I will definitely be stopping by this week!
It has taken a long time for this place to open. I hope that is not going to be indicative of their service.
Is Tim the son of Doug DeCinces - ex Angel player????
Yes..an ex-ballplayer himself. He custom builds home as well as own the 3 Beach Pit BBQs.
If Tim is the brother of Doug then I’m going to eat there everyday because we all know how good a cook Doug was!
Beach Pit is pricey and they serve small portions…
They are very resonably priced and they donot serve small portions…..
My experience at the Tustin location is very similar to others:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/beach-pit-bbq—-tustin-garage-tustin
agreed… way overpriced for what you get. Plus in my opinion the food was just ok.
Beach Pit rocks. We’ve been frequenting the one in Costa Mesa, which is a really popular neighborhood hangout (although the parking is woefully inadequate). The food, however, is awesome.
OK I’m baaaack with an opening day review…..(I know this isn’t Yelp);)
Made it there around noon-ish and no open parking spaces on Glassell but plenty in back. If you’re lazy like me no need to walk thru the Zitos patio area to the street because Beach Pit has a Secret Back Entrance. Just follow your nose to the mouth watering smells emanating from the ovens in back.
Alicia and Cherish were running the registers and were very friendly and informative about menu items. I asked what the sauce was like and got a good description of the mild and hot ones. Bottles on the wall list ingredients in case you’re curious. Ketchup was the first thing listed for the hot one.
Ordered up the beef brisket sandwich which came with 2 sides. Got the mac and cheese(yum!) and blueberry cornbread with a side of butter. Sandwich is about 6-7 inches long and the meat is cut to the same length in 3-4 slices and 1/8th inch thick. I asked for the sauce on the side and I got it that. Everything arrived in 5 minutes at the perfect temperature. Meat did seem kind of lean for brisket and you could detect a slight smoke ring.
Blueberry cornbread tasted great and the blueberries appeared only on one side but you couldn’t taste them that much.
It was $10 for the sandwich and $2 for soda with unlimited refills. They have Coke, Barqs, and other varities. Total with tax: $13.
They also have pulled pork or chicken pizzas which cost a few bucks more than a sandwich.
Never saw Nancy waltz thru the doors but was sort of expecting a Grand Entrance. Oh well.
Met the owner Tim who was there with his kids having lunch. I definitely will be back. Looks like the place can hold about 40 people comfortably with seating for a group of 20 along the right side booths.
Thanks..Hungry Guy…
I could not make a “grand entrance” at Beach Pit because I was in Mission Viejo for a preview of Farrell’s! I wish I could be at two places at once..but alas, not possible.
How was Farrell’s???!!!!
Farrell’s was fun…Here’s the video I took:

beach pit is ok, but nothign beats newport rib co!
i’ve had the food at the BIG A not to impressed and over priced, hopefully the resturants are better.
I tried this place only because Scotties Smokehouse BBQ is closed on Mondays. The food was ok but I think i will stick with Scotties at Glassell / Collins.
Beach Pit is OK, but like all BBQ joints, it ain’t cheap.
You’re not going to find any BBQ restaurants at “value” prices.
With the DeCinci name hype and the other locations, I’m sure BP will be successful.
But then again, Weinerschnitzel is “successful.”
I ended up not going last night when I was in the area. I didn’t want to waste my time going over there if I didn’t know if they were open or not (I wasn’t able to eat until around 9 PM). No one answered me on here what the hours are and their website still says “Coming Soon” without a phone number, etc. Oh well.
Craig, the hours were posted on the blog:
The Old Towne Orange restaurant will be open Monday-Wednesday 11 a.m. -10 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-11p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. (breakfast burritos and scrambles on weekends)
That is incorrect. You added those after I asked about the hours. And by the time I was in the area, I wasn’t near a computer.
The food is so good here it is always full of people.
Actually, my husband was there last night and he said there were very few people in the new Orange place around 8 pm
I would think that a review that can include all the hours and what specials they have on the weekend could give the address, instead of a link that requires two more steps to find the location the article is touting.
Good point. And the hours weren’t even listed until after I (or someone else) mentioned that they weren’t posted.
Hi Nacy, remember I recently recommended for you to try out Steer Crazy International BBQ in Capistrano Beach? Well, I stopped by this past Saturday and had the pulled pork with island veggies stir fry and a new fusion of garlic avacado potato salad. I met and chatted with owner and head chef Phil Knoke and he would like for you to stop by and check the place out one day. Just give him a call to set something up or just stop by. Take care! -Edgar Medellin-

I went to the Beach pit the day after it opend…..it was ok…i guess….VERY expensive and they dont give you large protions at all. I would SOOOOOOOO much rather have gone to the Grinder just up the street on the right….they have 1/2 pound pulled pork and chicken that is out of this World good!!…and the bread is AWESOME!!, and they have over 40 different root beers and 60 other sodas that you dont see anywhere else!
