Here are the latest restaurant casualties added to the O.C. Closure list.
machine. This is the third Black Angus to close this year in Orange County. Steak houses in Lake Forest and Tustin shut down in the spring. The Northern California steakhouse chain has closed several restaurants since filing for Ch. 11 bankruptcy protection in January.Got a tip on a closure? Post a comment on the closure list or email me at nluna@ocregister.com. If possible, send a photo of any “closure” sign you spot.
Can’t say I’ll miss those restaurants … there’s plenty more in their chain where they came from … except maybe for the no-name Mexican eatery.
Huge portions of mid-grade ice cream mixed with candy and stuff for $5 is a passing fad.
The whole Cold Stone Creamery franchise system is collapsing:

JohnB, you hit it right on the mark. Their ice cream is overpriced and it isn’t even that good. Only thing special about their product is that you get to choose toppings and watch them mix them into the ice cream in front of you, giving the average person the impression that the ice cream was somehow customized for them and is of high quality. Pffft! Can’t fool me with your overpriced ice cream!
I agree. My favorite ice cream is still Rite Aid!
Dreyer’s for me!
It will always be Thrifty to me. Though the prices have dramatically changed from when I was a kid.
ohhhh.. i loved the Carnation Ice Cream shop on bristol & Mcfadden.. too bad they switched to choclate syrup when they had awesome fudge sauce.. no more
The ice cream is great tasting but affotable, in this socilist enviroment.
Coldstones is actually cheaper than Baskin Robbins/Hagen Daz/ Ben and Jerry’s. Their portion sizes are larger, so it seems expensive, but per ounce they are cheaper. A scoop with topping (as compared to everywhere else) is $2.39 at the Coldstones near me.
Your comment was funny and so true…
I dunno, Cold Stone is still a lot better than a lot of the froyo places I’ve tried.
though I remain disappointed the Golden Spoon on Bristol and Sunflower in Costa Mesa closed, because I like their yogurt better than most of the oversaturated “nuevo” yogurt places and it was a convenient location.
however, for really good ice cream go to Hans’ on Bristol just north of Sunflower in the Vons shopping center.
Hans is the BOMB! Great Ice Cream RUM RAISEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johnny Rockets is over priced for what you get along with poor service.
I agree…..Johnny Rockets is overpriced. I only went there because (and very rarely) because the kids liked it. The food was OK. I went last week and had lunch (2 adults + 2 kids) and it came to $50. Ridiculous.
Johhny Rockets at Bella Terra has the worst service ever. The cook was eating the food right from the grill with his bare hands. My wife and I walked out of there. They didn’t even ask us what we wanted to drink either when we walked in and sat down. Avoid this one as well and maybe it will close and we can get a better store in there.
I had the same experience at the BJ’s across the street from Bella Terra. the waiter seemed very aloof, and didn’t ever ONCE ask us what we wanted to drink. they managed not to even attempt (nor succeed) to sell our party of four, complete with an appetizer and lunch for four, a single alcoholic beverage nor soft drink. In a brewery restaurant!!
and that’s not the first time I’ve run into bizarrely questionable service there. it sucked because I like BJ’s and go to the Irvine Marketplace one all the time.
Went to the Johnny Rockets at Knotts Scary Farm on the Scion day a few weeks back. The burger I had was actually pretty good (must have been all the grease). We didn’t get the fries as they were a la carte and my wife and I weren’t terribly hungry. A soda cost me four dollars! Had I known that I would have had water. So one burger and a soda cost fifteen dollars. Never again.
Since the park wasn’t full, the restaurant was nearly empty. The service was just okay. Since my wife and I split a burger the waitress assumed we were poor. When she ordered water to drink, the waitress told her the water was free. My wife was rather embarassed; I just laughed it off and only gave her a 10% tip. I’m sure the waitress thought she was “helping”, but that was rather insulting.
That Orange Coldstone location went downhill several years ago, like many other Coldstones have over the past decade. It turned into a dirty, sticky place with some really punky kids in there who couldn’t even look you in the eye, much less offer a genuine greeting or thanks for your business.
Remember about 10 years ago when Coldstone arrived on the scene with the peppy kids working behind the counter, singing and dancing to disco balls for tips and such? It was a happy, upbeat, polite and clean place that was a true event to visit for an ice cream treat. They slid downhill and became just another sloppy and grumpy fast food joing with snotty and/or sullen employees. What happens to these places that they forget what made them succesful to begin with???
Good riddance Coldstone, we won’t miss you in Orange.
I don’t remember it being there 10 years ago, but I do remember it opening there eight years ago…
JOJO - pretty much a stupid comment by you given that Troy says “about 10 years ago” in his blurb. The content of Troy’s message is quite accurate. Sadly enough this isn’t the only place where the quality of the help is declining in appearance, attitude general common sense in dealing with customers…it’s the state of affairs in many shops and eateries.
I had a same horrid experience at the Coldstone on Tustin across from the Main Place mall.. I went in and they were out of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream. Half of the toppings were unstocked. We walked out with nothing. The chickie behind the counter had no clue what was going on, and there was no manager there to ask. I complained on the Coldstone website, which would normally get you a coupon for a free ice cream. I didn’t even get an acknowledgment that they had received my complaint. I’ll only go back for my free birthday ice cream. That is, if they have any ice cream there.
the one across main place is on main street, but there is a crapy dairy queen on tustin st
Johnny Rockets’ location was poor, even being in a new center. You really couldn’t see it all that well. Once you went in the service was awful.
When are these “service” business learn that in these times lousy service does not earn a return visit?
is it just me, or does there just seem in a bad economy in 2009 to be even worse service than ever? I thought it was bad before, and it was, but every place I go seems to be taking it to new lows.
when I run into a business - ANY business with good service (I’m not even saying GREAT, just good) these days I’m actually shocked. not just surprised, but downright shock. you’d think that most places with dozens to hundreds of applicants who want to work for $8 an hour would be more than willing to make sure those employees bend over backwards for you, but that’s not what I’m finding from where I stand.
It’s not just you. I have noticed it as well.
I don’t think Cold Stone customers would necessarily go to Golden Spoon Yogurt instead, though. Golden Spoon serves a different clientele. If I were a former Cold Stone customer, I’d be looking for something else like Cold Stone, not a frozen yogurt shop.
The Cold Stone at Yorba Linda Blvd. and Bradford Ave in Placentia is still there, though I could be wrong about that. It always smelled like spoiled milk in that place. I stopped going to Cold Stone when I figured out I could do what they do by just buying my own ice cream, candy bars, and doing it myself at the kitchen counter at home.
Archie, the Golden Spoon is in the same shopping center as the closed Cold Stone. The closest other ice cream place would be way south on Tustin near Chapman (Baskin Robbins) and I don’t think locals shopping at Target or across the street at The Village are going to drive to Yorba Linda Blvd. and Bradford for a Code Stone. Can think of a few other frozen yogurt places at the Village but no ice cream stores.
There is nothing quite like Coldstone…there are a lot of similar yogurt shops (Pinkberry/Yogurtland /Cherry on Top/ other by the ounce places) and ice cream shops but none did the mixins like Coldstone…and Baskin Robbins or Dairy Queen are not the same as Coldstone. Golden Spoon isnt the same either! Is the Coldstone on Main St still open?
There is still a cold stone on newport & El Camino real in Tustin I believe right across from the blockbuster. I go there when I visit family.
people act like Cold Stone is SO expensive, but you do get a lot for what you pay, and one free “topping” included.
basically what you’re paying around $4 + tax for the smallest size at Cold Stone would cost you $5-6 + tax for something similar at Baskin Robbins or DQ. a regular single-scoop ice cream cone at BR is like $3 + tax … and not even that good in my opinion. not what I’d call reasonable for most people.
yes the coldstone on main st is still open… but I don’t predict for very long.
And I’d gladly go to golden spoon instead of coldstone. Tastes just as good, and costs less. Plus more room to sit.
I’m not suprised that the Johnny Rockets closed in Lake Forest. The prices were OK, the food was sorta OK, the service when they first opened was great, but went downhill since. And when there is a Carl’s Jr., Jack In the Box, Fuddruckers, and Dennys all within spittin distance, I don’t think they had a chance.
It will be interesting to see what might go in the space vacated.
Mariscos Baja mar Mexican Salvadorian food on Grand in between Fairhaven and Santa Clara…has been closed for over four months. Drugs and prostitution closed that puppy down…good riddance…
Gosh, I pass by there every day, and I barely noticed until now…Honestly, I’m always looking at that center…Someone must have finally ripped the sign down…
Jojo,
That totally makes sense now! The girls that worked there were the most inept and incompetent servers we have ever dealt with. They were hookers! The first time we went, it took them 10 minutes to bring out our drinks, but the tacos were good. The next time, they basically ignored us and we walked. I felt they had a genuine disdain for white people. I’d be interested in hearing what you know about their operation.
Great comment re disdain for Gringos. I have experienced this on several occasions myself in spite of the fact I speak enough passable spanish to place an order and carry light conversation.
guess that would be it
The food couldn’t have been all that bad if the prostitutes and drug addicts ate there, they generally know the good spots
I’m not surprised about Cold Stone’s demise. It’s been a long time coming. I count at least 4 in the area that have closed in the past year. There’s never a line anymore, yet the service is as poor as it gets. I have a cousin who lives in the Philly area. He says two years ago there was a Cold Stone on every corner. He says one by one they’ve all closed now. It was a decent concept at one time but the word on the street was that they mistreated their franchise owners and ruled with an iron fist. That’s always a death wish. They got what was coming to them. Good riddance.
I think (but I don’t want to swear to it) that HoToy’s Chinese in RSM closed. I’ve gone by there a couple of times during hours I expected it to be open, and no signs of life……
Wasn’t there a Cold Stone in the same center that the Johnny Rockets in Lake Forest was in? And it closed?
It’s still there.
yesterday was it’s last day actually. we tried to go with a giftcard on saturday and they were only accepting cash because sunday was their last day open.
I guess we have to go over to Marble Slab Creamery at Anaheim Gardenwalk for our ice cream “fix” now.
Hey I’ve got an idea Nancy! Have the Kogi Truck open up an “express” location here. Sure beats the current location across the street next to the massage parlor every week.
Just in case you are not aware but there are two left in Orange Main and Town and Country, and east Orange, Chapman and Jamboree in the Albertsons shopping center inside the gas station…just in case so you don’t drive so far.
I doubt consumers will miss CSC much in the locations that close.
Its ice cream product is full of air, artificial ingredients, and only tastes good if disguised with all the candy mix-ins, which together with the ice cream are extremely high in calories.
Frozen yogurt probably will last a bit longer.
But then again, for the pig out, Ferrell’s is coming on tap.
I suspect their ice cream is of a higher quality than CSC but the experience is a long term stay, vs. in and out with CSC.
MV Mummy, I did hear Ferrell’s wanted to use Blue Bunny Ice-cream or the Thrifty brand, I don’t call quality…
Now that Cold Stone is closed, what’s the status of Ferrell’s??
Opening day was to be this week….??
I have an inside source telling me opening day is November 4th………….There is an invitation only party happening at the new Farrell’s tonight…………I wonder if Nancy was invited?
$5 for a scoop of ice cream is never a good business model. I’d rather spend $6 at “In N Out” and get the #1 combo.
What about the Cold Stone Creamery in Tustin? Is that still open?
Yes that Cold Stone is still open.
Was wondering when the Johnny Rocket’s in Lake Forest was going to close. Went to that location with my kids about a year ago. Service was abysmall to say the least.
Stick to In-N-Out for a cheap, good burger and fries!
Can’t wait for Farrell’s.
Just head over to Joe’s Italian Ice and Ice Cream in Garden grove if you want good ice cream. It’s awesome.
Topz in Orange (Katella and Tustin) just closed also. Our family is really sad. It was a nice, clean place with really good burgers. We don’t eat fast food that much, but when we did it was our “go to” place. I don’t think it was a great location - couldn’t really see it well from the street.
If this is the same Topz as in Costa Mesa, I can understand why it closed down. They claimed their food was “healthy” fast food, yet it tasted terrible because of it. If you looked at the nutritional values, it wasn’t that much better than regular fast food, so the difference in bad taste wasn’t worth it. Plus, it was quite expensive for a burger and fries (sorry, aero fries LOL).
I kinda liked Johnny Rockets and I would go to that location every so often. I guess I didn’t go enough. Now that I think about it, I only went when I had a coupon. To me is was a cheaper alternative to Rubys.
I’m not surprised that Johnny Rockets closed down. The only thing I’m surprised about is that not more of their locations have closed. Their food isn’t very good (dry, tasteless meat patties and either not cooked enough or over cooked french fries), it’s very expensive for what you’re getting, and their restaurants by and large are filthy. There’s too much competition for the consumer’s dollar these days and with Ruby’s (not that great either but at least marginally better than JR) competing in the same exact market (retro greasy diner food), it’s a no wonder not more Johnny Rockets have failed.
Where is this mexican restaurant near the 22 on Grand? The closest one around there is… none that I know. Theres a Del Taco and Thai food place and on the other side a Chinese Buffet. Seems like your just making stuff up, obvious by how you refer to it.
It’s 2 blocks south. You should get out more, or get better glasses.
Oh thank you for the good laugh…
Birrieria Jalisco? that’s the only name I can find by Google.
nevermind
Having come from the midwest 10 years ago I was disappointed see all the corporate run eateries in OC. Very little original and, few authentic eateries, besides mexican (and those you have to search out). So with people being pinched in tough economic times and eating at home,it’s a good that all these corporate junk food eateries are closing. When we go out to eat, we eat Mom and Pop or family owned eateries. Keep the money in the familes!! They care that your happy and usually go the extra mile to carefully prepare your food, and not load it with salt and fat. I think the recession is creating opportunity for a return to family owned eateries. Good riddens to the corporate bunch
sure corporate franchises are everywhere but as for good standalone restaurants yes there are plenty, you just need to know where to look and be willing to go outside the typical mall or large shopping center. a typical example might be Tulsa Ribs in Orange.
also I believe the word is riddance.
Corporate franchises are everywhere, not just in OC. Applebees is in Times Square!
Who wants to eat at BlackAnus anyhow?
3 words… garlic cheesy bread
Man, I love me the Black Angus!
LGT: Anyone who wants to read a newspaper through their steaks.
All we need is for these restaurants to be replaced with some overpriced fish taco’s joint..
exactly
JB,
Sorry to say that the family owned places are going under too. The company I work for we do restaurant equipment sales and I’m seeing a lot of my independently owned/mom and pop places closing up too. Some that are new and some that even been around for many years. Scary times, but according to the news we’re coming out of the recession…yeah right.
“but according to the news we’re coming out of the recession…yeah right.”
I can’t possibly understand how growth in the last quarter (fueled by government subsidies which have now expired) translates into the recession being over. Unemployment is still rising (!) and until people are back to work and making a livable wage, restaurants will continue to do poorly.
A must visit is the new Go Bananaz in Tustin on Irvine & Newport in the Ralphs Center - super clean, excellent flavors, friendly staff - a little empty at times but the plasma tv’s tuned into sports or disney TV is a must for parents in need of a quick and reasonably priced treat
When you spend $$ at Johnny Rocket’s or any eatery for that matter and receive sub-par service with a sneer, let the management know about it. There is no guarantee they will respond to the situation, but it couldn’t hurt.
no wonder johnny rockets closed, there’s another one a hop away at the spectrum
I wouldn’t call it a “hop”; it’s really not that close. And the one at the Spectrum was moved and it’s really, really small and the wait times are horrible. It will probably close down..
I noticed the shuttered Carls Jr. in Fullerton over the weekend. I was suprised to see that the sign was removed but there were still chairs and tables in the dining room.
I could understand leaving the booths behind, but I thought that CKE would have pulled out any furniture that wasn’t bolted down.
give it a few days I’m sure?
I always hate to see a Carl’s Jr. close. In my opinion they are the best of the fast food places with the best over all selection. However, I too noticed this on the weekend. It has been a slow moving restaurant for a long time as I recall, so I guess it was bound to happen.
I may be mistaken but I believe that the Rockets in LF was closed long before Oct 6th. There is still one at the Spectrum, or was a few weeks ago anyway.
Too bad any of these places have to close. I feel badly for those that now join the ranks of the unemployed.
The next time I eat at one of these closed restaurants I won’t enjoy it more since they’re not there anyway
I moved away from OC a few years ago, I grew up down there and loved the restaurants. I was wondering if there are any SPOON’S restaurants left? I used to eat at the one in Orange on Tustin and the one off the 55 fwy at Dyer and also in the Mainplace Mall, great fajitas. I also liked Chevy’s in Fountain Valley on Brookhurst and the one in Anaheim Hills on weir canyon and Santa Ana Canyon, the BEST chips & salsa there. The other place I liked is taco Surf, we liked the one in Seal Beach and HB, are they still there. So sorry to hear about all of the closures, it is very sad! I want to come back to visit but don’t know where i will eat now. thanks for the info, let me know on those restaurants i mentioned if anyone knows.
Thank you!
OCalways: Spoons is long gone; most of the Chevy’s are too. Don’t know about Taco Surf as I’m down South.
As to where you will eat - it all depends are where you are and what you want.
Sorry to hear SPOON’S & Chevy’s is gone. I like Tex-Mex kind of food, what is left in the OC area? I just checked on line and Taco Surf is still going strong!
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sorry you asked what area, we will be in the Irvine and Santa Ana and Anaheim areas while we are there.
Thanks
There is a Spoons in Santa Ana off Dyer and the 55 near the Embassy Suites hotel.
MVMOMMY & OCalways do not know what they are talking about, there is a Spoons off the 55 freeway and Dyer exit. Also there is still a Chevys in Anaheim Hills, I don’t recomend the Spoons though
.
Chevys
8200 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road
Anaheim Hills, CA 92808
714-974-6703
714-974-1103
and
Spoons Grill & Bar
(714) 556-0700
2601 Hotel Ter, Santa Ana, CA 92705
I didn’t say ALL the Chevys were closed and I’m sorry for saying ALL the Spoons were closed - should have googled, but I didn’t feel like it. Plus I knew if the information was wrong SOMEBODY would jump in.
OC has always had company food places very few family run resturants, and I can remmeber as far back as 1969.
a win for small business,
If anyone ever walked through the kitchen of these restaurants,
you wouldn’t eat there.
For the best burgers in the world, pick up a package of “Laura’s” ground beef at the grocery …no, I don’t work for “Laura’s”. LOL
Certainly won’t miss Black Anus. As for the rest of the restaurants there are plenty still around. The area was just too saturated.
Is Hungry Hunter Restaurants still around? They had a great one in San Diego in Hotel Circle then they brought one to lake Forest/El Toro area and then to Anaheim near Angel Stadium and The Pond?
The Anaheim Hungry Hunter has been gone for years, it was leveled and turned into that dive they call Hookers, oh I mean Hooters…
PS The sald and ribs were to die for at The Hungry Hunter
What’s the deal with Carl’s Jr.? CKE says it was an older unit with no drive-thru window and its lease expired. I only know of a handful of Carl’s Jr’s with drive-thrus, so it doesn’t sound like a good reason to get rid of it. The one they say they’re closing though wasn’t in a real great spot, though, so perhaps that was a consideration. I used to frequent this Carl’s back in my FJC days. Most of the action is up near Harbour and Chapman, so perhaps they’re moving one up there? CSUF has a Carl’s on site…perhaps FJC can do that.
I’m not surprised that Coldstone is shedding stores, they didn’t seem to have a great eye for locations and the concept was a bit pricey in terms of calories and cost.
And Black Angus has been dying a slow death for years. Their food just has never been good enough to compete with Claim Jumper or Outback. We’ve been to the FV location a few times and the service has been crappy and the food mediocre every time.
The Carl’s Jr on El Toro & Muirlands does not have a drive-thru and it just went through a big remodeling inside. So, not having a drive-thru doesn’t seem to be hurting sales at this one.
Is there still the Keno’s restaurant out in Anaheim Hills and i think it was either Tustin or Santa Ana also?
Yes the Kenos is still there, but I never go it’s always been just OK
All these eateries contributed more or less to the obesity issue. Oh well. Hopefully, this will lead to skinnier people.
It is very sad that another one of my favorite steak house, Black Angus, closed. I hope the one in Fountain Valley stays open. Otherwise I have to take out a second on my house to take my date to Morton.
Judging from all the ice cream, burger and fast food junkie’s comments, I guess no one appreciated a romantic and reasonable price restaurant any more.
It’s all about families now. It used to be that only a handful of restaurants catered to families and the bulk of restaurants were for single people on dates or married couples without kids. That’s because families USED to eat at home 5-6 nights a week. And most of the time when the family did go out to eat, they went for pizza on Friday or Saturday night. Not anymore.
used to eat out 4 to 5 nights a week. Now 1 maybe 2 times a week. Main reason I cut back is that the service has gone downhill most places.
Don’t know why, but servers anymore don’t realize that tips is most of their income. Ate out tonight with my son, 20% tip. Last night ate out by myself at local place, 20% tip. Once in awhile try somewhere new that am not familiar with, lousy service.
Stick with those that know you best and seem to take care of you.
