Today, Zagat released the findings of its 2010 America’s Top Restaurants survey. The online report outlines diner habits, and food choices.

Here’s a category I thought you’d find interesting: *Best Burger in U.S. Note, Irvine-based In-N-Out Burger was named top choice in three different cities, while a hot dog hut won in Chicago!

Five Guys hand presses 100% ground beef patties in kitchen. A Little Burger is one pattie at 3.25 ounces. A regular burger comes with two patties

Vortex, Si! Port Of Call, No!

  • I like In-n-Out burger a lot, but in LA there is probable better burger joints… The Counter in Santa Monica, for one, is slightly more exciting (if not a better burger) than In-n-Out.

To be honest, it is kind of insulting to say that the best burger joint in a large metropolitain area is a fast food chain.

    • Sparkles says:

      What’s the insult?

In-n-Out consistently delivers perfect burgers and maintains higher standards than any independent burger stand. Their employees seem to enjoy working there and the organization has a fun and quirky California spirit. And, the burgers taste DELICIOUS!

Also, they won’t expand into a new area unless they can ensure a quality beef supply. Unless independent burger shacks are killing and grinding their own cows, you’re most certain to be using trash beef. Here’s the proof:

      http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/health/04meat.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=ground beef paralyzed&st=cse

The author of “Fast Food Nation” says that the ONLY burger he will buy for his children is In-n-Out. Otherwise, your burger alone might have the DNA from a thousand cows and scraps from overseas suppliers mixed into the beef.

I think the only “insult” is how most every independent and chain burger stand uses junk beef and passes it off as quality, “Angus”, etc.

    • Sean says:

You’re kidding me. The Counter? Come on. That burger is overpriced and hardly the quality of In N Out.

    • kingo says:

      The Counter? please….

      overpriced garbage

      .

  • Randy says:

Pie ‘N Burger in Pasadena tops my personal list.

    • steve says:

I agree - Pie ‘N Burger might be the best burger in California, if not the world. Simple, juicy, perfect. This is the “recipe” that In n Out is based upon.

  • Cowboy says:

Although King Taco is known for mexican food..they also make a terric burger.best in LA

  • Realist says:

Im ok with in and out myself. Counter is good but also very pricey. For 5 or 6 bucks In n Out cant be beat IMO.

  • Archie Goodwin says:

Yay, In-N-Out made the list several times! Five Guys!? Sorry, but Five guys shouldn’t even be on the list (obviously IMO).

  • rambo says:

one of the best restaurant burger has to be Billy’s on PCH in Newport! Its big enough to share and delicious!!

  • LGT says:

INO is good as a chain, but not “the best” when you factor in all the one-off burger joints out there.

I’ve had a Red Mill burger in Seattle. Not that great, but the onion rings were simply awesome.

  • Tai says:

Personally, i like Taco Bell’s burgers!

  • Jan Kerr says:

IN and Out– you have got to be kidding. The fries are good- but if you want an awesome hamburger- try Portillos at the Buena Park Mall. In and Out is soooo overrated

  • Dan says:

    2 words - The Habit!

  • Very good, best? says:

INO, I remember when the burger meat was visable from the outside of the bun (just like their 3-d signs show, HA!). Come on guys, raise it a quarter and add some real meat to the single patty burger, it has become too much bread, ruined that all-important meat-to-bun ratio.

  • ed oneil says:

IN n out. I know there are alot of great burger stands, but You can’t go wrong with In N out. If you have a complaint on your burger, well hey call customer relation and they will give you free combo the next time around. Come on you can’t go wrong with IN n out.

  • D. S. Baldwin says:

The absolute BEST burgers are at Houston’s. Mesquite fired and just delicious.

  • Stan says:

What happened to Knowlwood? Great burgers! IN n Out is good, but not great.

    • Jonathan says:

There’s a Knowlwood in Fullerton…burger is good, but INO is better.

    • unemployed says:

Also one in the Orange Tustin area. I believe it’s on 17th street.

      • jim s says:

Hard to go to Knollwood (which is good in my opinion) with Jerry’s dogs and their grill so nearby. I always have a burger there (Don’t tell jerry) because of the wood fired grill, and tasty sides of frys and chips

    • mvmommy says:

Knowlwood USED to be good, back in the day, but something happened and they just aren’t that good anymore……

      • jim s says:

The Irvine one at sand canyon, and the Tustin location have very good food, I respectfully disagree that they have declined. There is a lot of competition now though, but I don’t have a problem with their products, anything on their menu, or their locations.

I regularly look around at other locations and a group of several of us are pretty much in agreement that Knollwood is as good as you need, and probably better than most other locations.

        • mvmommy says:

have you been to the one in Fullerton or Laguna Niguel lately? I have and I probably won’t go back, except when I pick my dad up at the train station - cuz it is better than Spaghetti Factory. But this is just my taste buds opinion.

  • Conrad says:

I would like to submit the Jackson Hole of NYC as the WORST burgers. Tey are fried 7 are served on bread that falls apart.

  • Steve says:

Sorry NY. IN-N-OUT is better than burger joint. And cheaper!

  • ThinkAbout says:

In ‘N Out needs to make their meat patties bigger. I swear they split one pattie into two to cut costs or something! Weren’t the fries better and patties bigger back in the days? (up till the mid 80’s)

    • Josh says:

No, we were just all smaller and not used to over-feeding ourselves. They’ve showed what food serving sizes were like 20, 30 years ago compared to our Claimjumper sizes now. There is a reason America is so fat.

      • Steve says:

That is absolutely true. I remember going to McDonald’s as a kid with my grandpa and he’d order a hamburger, fries (the one in the white paper bag), and a coffee. And I am not that old so that was probably in the late 70s / early 80s. Nowadays people would order an angus burger, large fries (that size didn’t exist 20 years ago — at least not the quantity of the size, but the name perhaps), and a large soda (does anyone else remember that a large soda in the 1980s is what is considered a medium now?).

This link gives you an idea of how large our portions have become.

  • EKS says:

    Knowlwood USED TO BE GOOD….

  • Ed Wynn says:

The only thing I don’t like about IN ‘N OUT are the religious wackos that run the company.

  • Earl says:

Have to agree with Randy’s comment. Pie N’ Burger in Pasadena is the best all around burger in the L.A. area. I would also say that the Apple Pan in West L.A. is great also. Don’t get me wrong though - In N’ Out Burger is probably the best fast food burger and is darn good in a pinch! The Double Double Animal Style is great!

  • tee9zee says:

The burgers at Eat Chow in Costa Mesa are to die for.

  • Kelly says:

Portillo’s has the best burger I’ve ever had. Char-broiled to perfection and all the right trimmings for a delicious burger.

  • Ed C. says:

For the price, In-N-Out rocks. Portillo’s is a little pricier…but that is the price you pay for the best.

  • alex says:

What about Original Tommy’s? I like that place because of the chilli. But when I want a normal burger I just go to In n Out

  • King Smokey says:

    Fatburger, Knowlwood, Red Robin…..

There’s a theme here. Some people like a burger a little bigger than a kids cheeseburger from McDonalds, which is all In n Out is.

  • Bob Holt says:

In-N-Out is not quite the hamburger it was when the original owner was alive, but they still serve the best chain outlet hamburger around. Every In-N-Out that I have been to is clean and the workers look like they enjoy being there. I’ve been to other hamburger outlets and when I get my order a little voice sometimes asks me if this is really safe to eat.

  • Red Ryder says:

In n Out cuts the hearts out of the lettuce, the dry stuff off the onions and the outside two slices from tomatos. they use only the best parts of whatever goen into the burger. Their stores are cute fiftiesh kinda spots, are amazingly clean and the employees sparkle and smile all the time. The burgers and the fries are delicious all the time. On top of that, the price is incredibly fair to the consumer. What else is there to consider? In n Out is the best by far. No one comes close.

  • Christa says:

I have to say Fat Burger is WAY better than Inn N Out, it is pricier, but awesome. Knowlwood is still good, not my fav, but tasty.

Harbor House Cafe can pump out some great burgers too, far better than Inn N Out

  • Red Ryder says:

  • Jimmy says:

i like in-n-out…but if you want really good burger, try red robin…

    • Eric says:

Surely you jest!…………..and no I didn’t just call you Shirley!………………try ordering your burger medium rare at red Robin…………..it ain’t gonna happen………well done and charcoal tasting is the only way your gonna get it!…yuck!

      • Steve says:

Know why? I heard it’s because their burgers are pre-cooked — “some pink” or “no pink” — and they just reheat them at the restaurant…

        • DanGarion says:

Highly doubt it. Rumors like that always go around about chain restaurants, but I’ve yet to have actually seen such a thing with my own eyes. It’s one of those urban legends just like when people claim chain fast food joints use dog food quality beef. There are guidelines to human consumption and to the USDA grade the beef is they use.

        • Steve says:

Huh? I never said that I heard that they weren’t using USDA inspected ground beef (the USDA doesn’t grade ground beef). I said that I heard they have pre-cooked patties (from their food suppliers) and they re-heat them at the restaurant. I don’t really think that ranks up there with an urban legend linking dog food with fast food restaurants.

        • ChezDre says:

I agree with the statement above, that they must reheat the patties. I ordered a burger from Red Robin recently and it was nasty cold! I asked them take it back…

FatBurger, surely is the best burger around. Pricey, yes, but soooo worth it, especially with their grilled onions!

        • DanGarion says:

Never said you said that Steve, I was comparing your assumption to an urban myth. Funny though that years ago when I worked at Mc Donalds the ground beef patty boxes said 100% pure USDA inspected beef.

Anyway I don’t see what a business would gain by having cooked patties and then reheating them. Just because they can’t cook you one that’s pink and bloody doesn’t mean it’s because they are precooked. They are required to cook to a certain temperature due to health codes.

        • Steve says:

Dan: I said that the USDA inspects ground beef. They do not grade it like they do other cuts of beef (choice, prime, etc). So I’m not sure what the confusion is.. you said that McD’s had beef that said USDA inspected. What’s the issue?

I’m not so sure about your theory on beef cooking. There are plenty of restaurants that one can dictate their order: rare, medium rare, medium, well, etc. Also not sure why it seems so outlandish to you that Red Robin could be supplying their restaurants with pre-cooked patties. Patties which they had their food supplier pre-cook and then ship to each store. It doesn’t really seem that crazy to me or any one else I’ve talked to about it. Pre-cooking food is not something foreign in the restaurant business FYI.

        • jim s says:

I boycotted Carl’s for years and only went back for family harmony (wife was going w/o me) because of a “grilled” burger I got back in the 70’s that was frozen in the middle and an attitude on the part of the manager of the place. I don’t know if it was cooked and reheated, but it turned me off for a long time.

I have to say that their product no longer seems to be prepared in a way that would allow that, and has been a lot better.

        • DanGarion says:

I guess I just look at it this way Steve. Why would Red Robin go out of their way to precook a patty, when a fast food joint like Mc Donalds actually cooks them on a grill?

  • Steve Detrick says:

Paul’s Burgers in Los Alamitos is tough to beat. Nice sized patties and the perfect amount of toppings. Ruby’s Diner has a very good burger for a chain.

  • J Baker says:

I’d have to know what the parameters were for the contest. If it’s for the best chain food, then INO might have a shot. But who can be taken seriously when they vote for the best burger in Los Angeles as INO? That’s just ridiculous. Many restaurants serve much tastier and bigger burgers than INO. If you’re driving by an INO and you’re hungry and in a hurry, then go for it, they have good burgers. But if you have the time to sit down, just about any “American Food” restaurant will have better tasting, bigger, more satisfying burgers. Heck, now that I think of it, Tommy’s serves burgers as a chain in L.A. that are just as good as INO.

  • CUY says:

I dont really eat hamburger…maybe twice a month.
If I am craving for one, I go to IN-N-OUT with fries and strawberry shake!!

  • Tim G says:

I am a HUGE fan of In-N-Out, but one burger that might beat them is Fatburger. It is the closest to home-made.

  • mike says:

Its a good thing they were just grading hamburgers. In n Out burgers should make the list. They are tasty. Their fries, not so much.

    • DanGarion says:

If you want near to INO quality burgers with amazing french fries try Five Guys in Carson or Cerritos. Their cajun fries are amazing.

      • Bunny says:

Is it true that a cheeseburger from five guys cost close to $7? I’ve never heard of them until now and I’d like to try it.

        • DanGarion says:

A Five Guys cheese burger (which is 2 patties) is $4.95.

  • joey says:

don’t forget habit burger, they are building an new location in fullerton across from cal state fullerton

  • joe orange says:

Anyone who thinks zagat is impartial is a fool. In and Out is good, but there are a lot more burger joints that are better, ie Father’s Office.

  • Duane says:

In-N-Out is good, but better hamburgers are at Tom’s Place at Lakeview & La Palma in Anaheim. The employees are the friendliest around anywhere. My wife & I used to go there at least once or twice a week when we lived in YL. We retired and moved to Las Vegas about 5 years ago and go to Tom’s whenever we are in So Cal. I wish Tom would build a place up here.

    • Archie Goodwin says:

Tom’s Place is kind of out of the way in an area you’d never expect to find a burger joint. Never ate there. Perhaps I’ll give it a shot one of these days.

  • mitch says:

as other have said, there really isn’t a better deal than in-n-out when it comes to the quality of burger you receive for the price you get it at.

sure, other places have larger burgers than in-n-out but i don’t think i have ever left hungry after eating a double-double. lots of burgers leave me with a stomach ache from the combination of size and grease, but in-n-out always seems to be just right.

my three favorite burgers in orange county in no particular order:
    ruby’s
    in-n-out
    fatburger

    others:
the counter - good when really hungry, little too greasy for me to eat with any frequency…
carl’s jr. - favorite “national” chain hamburger
red robin - don’t like their burgers… i always feel crappy after eating them… i do like other items there, just not the burgers
tk burgers - good for a simple, non-greasy burger

  • Gene says:

I was raised in the Mid-west but have lived in California for over 40 years. I have YET to have a really good hamburger in this state.
Nothing compares to those served in a dive bar anywhere in Wisconsin….

  • Mike says:

In & Out is number one in So Cal for one reason. Price!!!

No one can make a better burger for that price. Sure there are probably a lot of burgers better than In & Out in So Cal but when you factor in price, it can’t be beat. It’s an institution down here so fast food burger or not it should always be considered on any list.

    It’s a great burger for the masses….

  • jimbob1957 says:

In-n-Out are okay. Not the best, but good for a chain. Fatburger makes a better burger, especially when you order it on the char. In San Francisco Joe’s Cablecar is much better than In-n-Out.

Besides at In-n-Out you have to get several to equal one Fatburger.

  • Steve says:

The almighty Zagat has spoken again!

  • Pete says:

You need 3 patties from In-N-Out to taste the beef. Their burgers are too small! Carl’s 6-dollar burger is much better!

  • Bill says:

    Barf.
In-N-Out is the worst burger I’ve had.
    Even Wendy’s is far superior.

  • Carol says:

I’m partial to Father’s Office for the best burger in LA, but really, In-N-Out pretty well rocks, so I won’t quibble with the discerning palates of the Zagat community. Pie N Burger and Apple Pan run a close second, and joints like Carl’s, Wendy’s aren’t even in the race.

  • Tim says:

Whether or not there are single restaurants or small chains in localized areas making better burgers than In-N-Out, I could not say. I would think that for a chain its size, INO is by far the best with second place lagging far behind. I can’t even believe anyone out there would seriously compare the quality of Carl’s Jr. six dollar burger with a Double Double from INO.

  • Goodvibe61 says:

    A couple things:

    1. Most of the places we’re discussing make really, really good burgers. In N Out is great. Five Guys I think is great too. Fattburger rocks. Knowlwood can be delicious. Tommy’s classic chiliburger is fantastic. These are all basically quality burgers for those who appreciate a great burger. I must say that when I eat at INO I feel like I’m getting fresh, qualtiy ingredients just about every time, and that’s saying something.

    2. Price can be important, and In N Out’s pricing is just extraordinary, even now with the discounting that most chains are doing. In N Out didn’t have to change their prices, they were already far and away the most competitive, and I believe that’s always been part of their success as well. They’ve kept the menu simple, they focus on quality, and they do extremely well.

    3. I have to echo Duane’s comments above about Tom’s Place. If you’ve lived in North OC for awhile you probably have heard about this joint. It’s old school comfort short order cooking at its best. They have a great burger. The customer service is great; I think it must be family owned, and they work the joint and they take care of their customers. I know guys who practically live at this place, it’s on the corner of Lakeview and La Palma, right down the street from a Farmer Boys that makes a pretty good burger as well.

    4. If you like a place like Tom’s place, you should check it out, and also PK burger on Imperail Highway, just east of Kraemer. These type of mom and pop greasy spoon joints make some tremendous burgers! Same with Brea’s Best. North OC has several of these places (Troy’s, Athenians, etc.)that make delicious burgers!

    2.

    • DanGarion says:

I will have to check out Tom’s Place I work around the corner from there! As for PK Burger on Imperial Highway, that place is great!

    • Reese says:

PK rocks! The husband and wife call you by your name and are super nice. The food is good to great. Prices aren’t bad either.
Imperial at Valencia. They make you feel like family.

    • J Baker says:

I live in North OC and about 10 minutes from Tom’s and PK. Both are excellent as is Brea’s Best. I like Brea’s Best of the 3, but would never quibble about going to the other 2. The only thing that keeps me from going there more often is it’s about twice as far as Tom’s or PKs.

  • Best experience says:

Driving out to the old Knowlwood’s original roadhouse on Imperial before the 91 was built, having a great burger and beer with my dad at a picnic table out in the eucalyptus grove in back.

    Can’t beat that.

  • Dave says:

I’ll never understand the fascination with In-N-Out. I’ll gladly take ANY Carl’s Jr. hamburger over theirs.

Others that beat it are The Hat, Tommy’s and Farmer Boys.

And In-N-Out’s fries? Bleech. Fried dirt.

    • hey now says:

OKay Carls Jr? That’s pushing it don’t you think? The Hat is only good for their pastrami,Tommy’s burgers are gross, low grade beef;only their dogs&chili cheese fries are worth writing home about. Farmer boys too expensive&too long of a wait!

      • Dave says:

No, I’m not pushing it. Give me a Western Bacon Cheeseburger over anything they serve at In-N-Out.

Tommy’s is gross? Please. If I’m gonna get a burger, it’s gonna be good. And Tommy’s rocks.

Farmer Boys has the hottest burgers I’ve ever had. Right off the grill they are steaming, and that’s a good thing.

In-N-Out is like the Radiohead of hamburgers: extremely overrated for what they do, yet they have a huge following. Go figure!

        • Steve says:

In-N-Out is the Radiohead of hamburgers… I love it!

        • Archie Goodwin says:

I like the Western Bacon Cheeseburger at Carl’s, but the fries have got to go. Gimmee those zig-zaggy fries they used to have in the early 80s. I know they were made from paste, but they were delish.

  • Hungry Guy in Orange says:

Knowlwoods has gone DOWNHILL and is overpriced! Gotta love Zagat. Didn’t they rate Wendy’s pretty high last year in a survey?

    My list:
    1. In and Out
    2. Habit(tri tip is dang good too!)
    3. Five Guys

Have been to Portillos for hot dogs only so will have to try that next time.

And once again what’s the NEWS on the Five Guys supposedly coming to Orange this year? Did the economy kill that idea?

  • Annuity Pro says:

    Home made is the best!

  • mvmommy says:

WHAT!!??!! I have just read through all these posts and not ONE from the “red meat is gonna kill you”, and “all of your are just big fat slobs” posters!!! Where are they?
Probably out having a In N Out burger while no one is looking….;)
My opinion: I love hambugers and will eat one from just about anywhere. Fried or grilled, ground beef in a pattie is just so good! Along with the mayo, ketsup, mustard, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and anything else you have laying around!
I will admit though, that I do not like McDonalds hamburgers - not sure why, just don’t.

  • Archie Goodwin says:

Now we just gotta get The Hotdog Building Co. to come back.

  • Robert says:

Five Guys blows away IN-N-OUT and I’ve lived on the West Coast all my life. When the Snyders were alive IN-N-OUT was much better. It’s not the same with Ms. Martinez at the healm.

    • Archie Goodwin says:

Meh. I’ve had both and think it’s the opposite. Five Guys just doesn’t taste as good as INO. But then, as with all the other burger joint opinions, it’s purely subjective.

  • BurgBoy says:

The fact that most all of you are debating the best burger, and 90% are discussing fast food…just shows you the narrowed mindness that follows these surveys, and probably the same contributants that voted a fast food chain to represent the LA market. Unbelieveable….
In and Out is a great chain burger, as is Carl’s Jr., as is Fatburger etc…..but get out of the drive through, and sit down to enjoy a burger….LA is Burger Savvy enough to know In and out shouldn’t represent the best So Cal has to offer….Umami, 8oz, etc…..they have GREAT burgers…screw the price, the vote is for the best…period…you rate price as a seperate category…

    • Steve says:

Haven’t you noticed that our culture is price based and not quality / value based any longer? It happened a while ago. That’s why people complain on this site all the time that something is too expensive and then say they could just go to “XYZ” place and get it cheaper. CHEAP is the name of the game in today’s society and forget quality no one cares about that as much any more.

      • DanGarion says:

Agree 100% with your statements Steve.

      • hey now says:

What do you mean Steve, just because someone( based on finances or what have you),eats McDonalds every night instead of Mortons, means they don’t care about quality? It’s called living&EATING within your means!!! Also in many cases the “cheap” restaurants make a better tasting burger than the “quality” er expensive places do!

        • Steve says:

What do I mean? I thought I was pretty clear. What I mean is that BurgBoy rightfully pointed out that Nancy’s original post was about Zagat rating the best burger NOT the cheapest best burger. And yet her post digressed into another rant about how expensive everything is, when that was never the point of the post. I realize I go off topic a lot, so it’s no big deal, but that was what I meant.

    • DanGarion says:

So what you are saying, you don’t expect people to discuss fast food burgers on a “Fast Food” blog?

  • Jimmy says:

if you really want good burger, you have to go to mt. baldy at mt. baldy inn…i’m still dreaming about it…

Where the heck are the Detroit burgers, or Milwaukee or Cleveland?

Hey, Miller’s Bar and Red Coat Tavern here in the Detroit area blow Five Guys away. I’ve had Five guys in our Oak Park area. Great atmosphere, but the burger is a tad above Wendy’s.

This is wrong. Just so wrong.

I am personally hooked on TK burger in Newport and have been for years. Its a good burger, good price and it’s gotta unique quality that sets it apart from a lot of others. I recently went to a little place called the Hole in the Wall in Santa Monica which was pretty good but it was really pricey. With a burger fries and drink I think it was $12 bucks

Interesting note: I read that Gordon Ramsay’s favorite burger in the World is In and Out.

My Fav burgers that I have had two are on this list.Duanes in Kauai is awesome, its a little shack on the side of the road and the price and quailty is awesome……I dont think you can say enough about In N Out, Everyone who said that Knollwoods was good back in the day is dead on, must be their purcahsing of meat and preperation……Counter is very good but over priced, one very random place that I love a burger at it is Gulfstream in Newport, I know it sounds random but its so damn good and even the manager told me they won an award a couple years back for how good it is……….Ok nobody brought up TK Burger in Newport, Huntington Beach, and Costa Mesa, thats a darn good burger………..Also another random place yet all locals in Newport know how good the burger is at Casadiys
