We all have fond memories of Pink Dot, which came to the rescue on many a youthful night when suddenly - gasp! - we found ourselves completely out of beer and in desperate need of a roast beef sandwich at 1 in the morning.
PD only serves Venice and West Hollywood now, but late-night food-and-booze delivery is apparently enjoying a renaissance in Orange County. First came Midnight Muncheez, and now a service called HB Liquor Liquor has debuted.
Despite the Surf City-centric name, owner Robert Khamis tells me he’s expanded deliveries to Sunset Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday-Saturday (his site says otherwise and needs updating, he tells me).
Besides snacks, beer and hard liquor, Khamis says he’s going to be teaming up with restaurants to deliver Philly cheese-steaks, Mexican food and pizza. There is a $4.99 delivery charge, and alcohol prices are marked up a bit, but the trade-off is worse, as is made clear by the company slogan: “Better Than a DUI.”
(Keep reading to print coupons for a $1 six-pack and a $5 twelve-pack.)

Do you think it’s such a good idea to have delivery drivers serving as the only barrier to underage drinkers buying liquor?
yadthink…really? That has to be the most ridiculous statement I’ve read all day. Why would the delivery company be willing jeopardize their liquor license anymore than a liquor/grocery store or a restaurant would?
And yours, Sara, is the most ridiculous statement I’VE seen all day. The obvious answer is the delivery company has less chance of getting caught in such a situation. A grocery or restaurant has more employees supervising transactions involving liquor. No one other than the deilvery driver and the recipient of the alchohol would be party to an underage alcohol purchase.
Because of course, it would never cross the mind of local police to test them a few times….
Sara, I’m with you. They will be shut down if they deliver to minors.
I love how each of the comments refers to “the delivery company”…assume much? This liquor store doesn’t have a “delivery company”, it’s the guys who’ve worked there for years (read=have experience in ID verification) who do the deliveries.
I’d have to say that EACH of your comments is, to quote each of you “the most ridiculous comment IVE seen all day”.
Um Drey, it says right there in the story - “and now a service called HB Liquor Liquor has debuted.”
If they’re delivering alcohol at 1am, they damn well be delivering condoms too.
“Better Than a DUI.”
203,866 DUI arrests in Calif. 2007
Average cost to driver after arrest? > $5.00
or:
Delivery cost $5.00
So, Like Radical Rick says: “How tough is it?”
**I think it’s a great idea. Keep the boozers home, instead of out trolling for brew. It shouldn’t be too problematical to check ID’s of the buyers. If they’re underage, call the cops. Word will get around.
