Forget Kogi Korean BBQ taco trucks. Bring on the cupcake van.
Sprinkles Cupcakes launched its first mobile cupcake van on Monday, serving 500 cupcakes in Los Angeles.
Once its cupcake-shop-on-wheels experiment gets off the ground in L.A., the Beverly Hills-based chain said its next stop will be Orange County.
“Yes, we want to take the Sprinklesmobile to the O.C.,” said Nicole Schwartz, a rep for Sprinkles Cucpakes, which has a shop in Corona del Mar.
Schwartz said “stay tuned” for more details as “we haven’t plotted out our
schedule yet.”
The chain will “Tweet” its Los Angeles locations on its new mobile Twitter account: @sprinklesmobile.
This new venture by Sprinkles makes me certain that the mobile food trend is no passing fad.
Roach coaches have been around for years. But taco trucks have never been known for offering delicious culinary eats — and treats.
Kogi BBQ changed that last fall. The taco truck, co-founded by a professionally trained chef from Orange County, cranks out made-to-order kimchi quesadillas and Korean short-rib tacos daily for throngs of Twitter-following fans.
Other ‘gourmet’ meals-on-wheels trucks are now following suit from New York to Seattle to Texas. (Wall Street Journal - Taco Nation slideshow.)
“Mobile food is one of the hottest things going all over the country. Brooklyn has its ribs truck, Manhattan has its dessert trucks, and now Los Angeles has the cupcake patrol,” restaurant consultant Clark Wolf told the Los Angeles Times.
Tell us: When Sprinkles arrives in O.C., where should they patrol? What other mobile foods would you like to see in Orange County? Write in and let us know.

I’m curious if mobile food trucks are inspected by the health department the same as brick-and-mortar restaurants and, if so, why I don’t recall seeing one listed in the restaurant inspection violations reported by the OCR.
They must be inspected as Kogi was told to make some improvements and refused so left OC.
you tricked me yesterday into thinking they’d be at the Grove when it was actually Sunday! i’m still disappointed i didn’t get a cupcake.
I LOVE IT!!!!
wonder if they’ll bother to get a health department permit or if they’ll be too arrogant like kogi’s.
nancy- please keep up up to date on when they will be in oc- i will definitely have to go!
This is an AWESOME idea. I would go downstairs right now & buy a cupcake if the cupcake van was nearby.
by the way nancy, did you think to ask sprinkles if they have obtain or will obtain an o.c. health department permit? i mean after the kogi’s mishap it seems like a logical question for a reporter to ask.
I will break my diet for Sprinkles!! Since there is a bakery in Newport, there first stop should be Costa Mesa. Yum.
This will last only until they start selling the brownise.
sorry i meant brownies..
…just what fat people sitting at computers all day need.
Congrats! You are the first poster to mention “fat people” in regards to a fast food blog! You are so original. But you forgot to say that it will be Sprinkles fault that the people are getting fat.
you’re so original!! go get yourself a cupcake, fatty.
Thank you, I will.
I think the idea is great but why are they using such an ugly colored van?
seriously! somebody who works there must have said, “i think we should use poop colored paint.” they should have made it baby pink.
Actually, I htink the color is supposed to be chocolate icing brown. Good color for cupcakes, but not necessarily for a van. Maybe a powder blue so the browns and pinks on the cupcakes decorating the sides stand out.
Anything but the brown that they have. I don’t want to buy a cupcake from that truck!
How much does a Sprinkles cupcake cost? If I had to drive anywhere to get to the cupcake van…forget it.
They cost $3.25 each. A little pricey, but it is definitely worth it, considering nasty grocery store cupcakes are about $2 each.
I think susiecakes are better than sprinkles.. but that’s just me!
Nothing will ever replace the Helm’s Bakery Trucks that used to roam So Cal. Donuts…..mmmm
Oh you are sooooo right. I wondered if anyone else would remember them. I was preschool and a little older, my mom didn’t drive like so many other housewives then, so there was usually a little gathering around the truck on those two days a week.
I agree with Rick, SusieCakes is my favorite, but Sprinkles is still so good!
I don’t understand why these trunks ask so much for their food when they are saving a ton of money not renting or paying taxes.
Um, Taxes? Why kind do they pay?
Please bring SPRINKLES cupcakes to north OC. How about CSU- Fullerton. We brought some for my daughters graduation in JUNE. Everyone had one and thought they were AMAZING! I wish they were closer than Corona Del Mar.
