Another Trader Joe’s opening soon in O.C.

May 27th, 2009, 3:00 pm · 22 Comments · posted by annieburris

Trader Joe's adding two more O.C. storesThe long-awaited Trader Joe’s in Huntington Harbour is slated to open June 12, company spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said.

That day, the store will have a lei-cutting – similar to a ribbon cutting – and live entertainment.  The new store will be Trader Joe’s third in Huntington Beach, and 18th in Orange County. A 19th store is slated to open later this year in Aliso Viejo.

The Trader Joe’s market will replace an abandoned Ralphs near Warner Avenue and Algonquin Street. Ralphs left the Huntington Harbour Mall in May because its 30-year lease had expired, according to Cozette Dunlap with property owners D. D. Dunlap Companies.

Trader Joe’s will take over about 14,000 square feet of the 33,000-square-foot space and the rest is to be divided into small restaurant and retail shops.

The rapid expansion of all of these markets and cafes in Orange County is mind boggling. I love Trader Joe’s for sure. However, one has to wonder why so many? With 19 stores there is now one store for every 150,000 people in Orange County. Statistically speaking, that’s phenomenal. It would not be so phenomenal if there weren’t at least a half a dozen other major grocery chains in the county.

Huntington Harbor ?! Who cares,we’ve been after one in Fullerton for years. Still no store, I guess we’re not toney enough for them.

    • ChezDre says:

I’m with you on that one westsideclay! Who effin cares! 3 in HB now, really…why??
Oh well, that’s why I frequent fresh&easy instead!

And I’ve been hoping for one near the La Habra Heights area!

The Brea one is too far and the Whittier one is a pain to get in and out of - and can be quite a drive as well.

Trader Joe’s PLEASE come to the La Habra area!!!

I agree with you, they put them in the same places and don’t expand to other cities that need it. I’m not driving to Long Beach, , Cerritos or H.B. to spend my money. I guess Fresh n Easy gets it!

There can never be too many Trader Joes!

  • nobailout says:

i love traders, great deals and good stuff. go blo haters!

  • Granny says:

I’ve requested one in the Cypress area and nothing. I agree, we don’t have enough money for them. But, we finally got the Costco and we will give them all our money. TJ’s YOU LOSE!!! Cause we’re rich!!!

  • Jim Lowerre says:

I love shopping at TJ’s. I think their peanut butter is the best you can buy.
But I am beginning to wonder why they are prejudiced toward Huntington Beach and Irvine when it comes to opening new stores. I live in Garden Grove, and I am beginning to get really peeved that I have to drive to Seal Beach or HB to shop TJ’s.
It’s “Garden Grove”, not “Garbage Grove”! There are a couple of vacant properties in my area that would work very nicely (including a former drug store at Brookhurst & Katella, not far from Disneyland).
What do I have to do… challenge the CEO to a sumo match? If that’s what it takes to bring TJ’s to Garden Grove - then so be it!!

    “Yukikaze”

  • ashley says:

The 3 TJ locations are in completely different parts of HB. If you don’t care about HB, then stay out, our beaches would not miss you at all and neither would the community.. yes HB is a community, not just another city.

    Nancy-

I saw this YouTube video about Trader Joe’s and knew you would like it:

Trader Joes are nice, but you can find a lot of the same stuff for less at Smart and Final or Winco.

  • Philly Girl says:

I brought this up when it was first posted here- why so many stores in HB?

Fullerton is a family and college town and is asking for a TJs! The Brea store is a logistical mess (parking…ack!) and the Yorba Linda store is a bit far.

I have been going to Fresh and Easy, but it’s south Fullerton location is a bit off the mark- should have researched clientele better. I am happy to see that there is a Sprouts Market going up behind Brea Mall.

It is becomming a bummer to read about all of the other OC areas getting all of the restaurant and food love (e.g. TJs, Chipotle gathered from this blog), while us North County folks are stuck suffering through horrific wait times at all the eateries around Brea Mall.

  • ocmamma says:

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Trader Joe’s! Thanks for the update, please tell me more about the opening as it gets closer.

  • AV Resident says:

Why the delay with the opening of the Aliso Viejo store? The construction pace seems to be awfully slow. I thought it was originally scheduled to open last year.

  • Jim Jones says:

You guys are all freaks, its a market where you buy food, who cares. I live down the street and when it opens I will purchase food there. How exciting.
