In between trips this week to his restaurants in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, I had the opportunity this week to interview food icon Wolfgang Puck.
The carb-counting Puck, 59, is heading to Orange County this Saturday for the grand re-opening of his South Coast Plaza restaurant — Wolfgang Puck Bistro, located at Macy’s.
We talked about the remodeled eatery, Orange County diners (are we any different than Los Angeles foodies?) and what fast-food restaurant he’s willing to eat at — if forced by his kids. (Hint: It’s not McDonald’s.)
My only regret : I brought up food celebrity Anthony Bourdain during our conversation, which did not go over well. Mentioning the food industry’s current “it man” to Puck was like bringing up Steve Jobs to Bill Gates. It was not a good idea.

I spotted Anthony Bourdain at a March restaurant conference in L.A. His fave fast food? In-N-Out's Animal-style burger!
“But, does he have a successful restaurant?” Puck counters when I rave about Bourdain’s funny personality.
Ouch! Moving on …

I would love to meet Anthony , my friend has gone to dinner with him before.
I LOVE Tony. (Heck, I dreamed about the guy a couple of times.) But yeah, Puck brought up a good point. I know he’s all about traveling and eating now, but I would love to see Tony take on the restaurant challenge. I mean, it was fun as heck to watch him and Eric Ripert worked the line in that one No Reservations special. His restaurant adventure would be cool to watch. Just sayin!
Such egos….Anthony Bourdain is so cool, I love watching “No Reservations”
I can’t figure out how Anothony B can even taste food…………considering how many cigarette’s he smokes……….the guy’s a chain smoker!
I love Bourdain! Can the OC get an interview w. him instead of Wolfgang who is kinda of passe these days?
Hahhster: I’ll work on it. But, I did have an opportunity to ask Bourdain a question during a speech he gave at a local restaurant conference. I asked if he ate any fast-food, and he said he loved In N Out. He orders Animal-style burgers.
Not sure what Wolfy’s angle was on his “…successful restaurant?” remark. Julia Child, and for that matter, Rachael Ray weren’t restauranteurs either. I suppose a retort question could have been “But, does Puck have a successfully running TV gig?”
Absolutely. It sounds to me like Puck is jealous. Bourdain DID have a successful restaurant in NYC - Les Halles - but how’s he going to have time to run the restaurant and do his travel gig too … and given the choice, I wonder which one Puck would choose. For the rest of us, it’s a no-brainer.
