The Red Mango vs. Pinkberry froyo wars continue. This just in from Eater LA:
Pinkberry may have just closed a round worth $15 million of new funding, but not to be outdone, today, froyo rival Red Mango has announced that it has …invented a new flavor: Tangomonium [via Eater LA: Froyo Wars.]
Freebie alert: To celebrate the fruit and citrus flavor, invented by Red Mango founder Dan Kim, participating Red Mango shops will give customers a free, one-topping scoop on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
Red Mango has frozen yogurt shops in Fullerton, Newport Beach, Laguna Niguel and Irvine. (Locations)

More food freebies/deals:
I have to say I’m a little perplexed by all these freebies that are being given out. I know the economy is bad and all (supposedly for 100% of us) so I guess they are falling into that marketing mantra, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. If times are tough, how is giving something away from free going to help your bottom line.
I suspect that it does very little to gain repeat customers and sometime in the future marketing people will look back on this time period and wonder what they were thinking. I bet there will be many case study classes taught in MBA schools about it.
Totally agree with you Nick. Freebies and value deals are short term gains.
I don’t have any thing to back up this theory, but I imagine that a lot of these marketing people are lost when it comes to what to do with this economy so they are making up gimmicks like free food so that they can tell the CEO, “look, we got a bunch of ‘customers’ waiting in line for our food; look how great we are and how great our food is.” But the reality is those people aren’t really customers because these stores aren’t seeing repeat visitors from these free giveaways.
i am on a tangomonium mission…must try it!
The freebies are an attempt to get people to try the product. If KFC were not giving away grilled chicken how many would drop $10+ for a bucket that they were unsure they would like…who would pay $5 for a cup of yogurt that you might not enjoy. Free gives people the chance to try it and then decide if they want to pay for it in the future. The alternative is discounting which justs lowers the consumers expectation of what something should cost…look at the Whopper — not sure I think itis worth more than $0.99 given all the promotions for years.
As for EPL, not sure why they felt they needed to give away their chicken recently…people who like grilled chicken already knew about them…looks like they paniced with the KFC offering.
Plus look at all the free advertising they get.
The Golden Spoon in Long Beach by the Trader Joes also trying to find new flavors and letting anyone who comes in a free taste. They have been making up their own flavors and are usually much different than the ones I’ve seen at many of the local yogurt shops I go to.
I was just at that goldenspoon on sunday, and I didnt see any special flavors. I ended up getting my usual flavor, peanut butter.
Coke dealers give it away just like selling soap. In the olden days we used to get free sampels of things like Tide and fabric softener in the mail. It builds the brand.
I works, you should try it, if your in business!
Just establishing the initial phase of “word of mouth”.
