2/26 update: The opening of Kean Coffee in Tustin has been delayed until late March. Stay tuned for more details.
I stopped by Kean Coffee in Newport Beach this week and ran into co-owner Karen Diedrich.
Karen is the lovely wife of Martin Diedrich, who founded Diedrich Coffee in the 1980s. The Costa Mesa couple opened Kean Coffee in late 2005, and are making plans to open a second cafe in Tustin.
Karen said construction of the former Starbucks and Diedrich Coffee cafe on Newport Avenue is finally under way. She expects (cross fingers) to open the new Kean Coffee next month.
As many Kean Coffee fans know, Martin Diedrich roasts coffee beans at the Newport Beach cafe, which is why the coffee tastes so good. The cafe’s baristas often compete in regional and national “latte art” (shown) competitions.
Martin Diedrich is expected to split his time between Newport Beach and Tustin once the new cafe opens.
Kean Coffee in Tustin will open at 13681 Newport Ave. in the same center as Wahoo’s Fish Taco and Souplantation. The Newport Beach Kean Coffee is at 2043 Westcliff Drive (corner of Irvine Avenue and East 17th Street.) (Hours, directions here.)

I am so glad there will be one in Tustin again. I used to go to the Dietrich’s Coffee in Tustin. There was a wonderful ambiance there.. Love how the coffee tastes, too!! How about one in the city of Orange? Near the “Village of Orange” formerly called “The Mall of Orange?
I wouldn’t mind one in the 55/Dyer area…and/or the Orange Circle. Man, do I miss Diedrich’s!!!
Easy Judith, that is how Diedrich failed, too much too fast…
Anyone know if they serve the same orange drinks that they did at Diedrich’s? They used to call if the Siberian Citrus, I forget what they changed it to… white siberian or something.
i really love kean coffee-overall it’s a better experience than the other coffee places…more personal and great quality every time. i love the infusions…yummy!
HOORAY, Diedrichs are back in retail coffee. I was saddened when they first were taken over by Coffee People, than the silly green mermaid. Many of their stores in the Portland, Oregon area became Bux, went corporate and all. No more drinkable coffee there. Many of the folks who used to run the local shops went independent, partially fixing the problem. I am SO glad to learn Diedrich are making a foray into retail coffee, even with a small start. Next time in OC I shall have to find one of them…….
die-hard Diedrich’s fans will recall that center as having a Diedrich’s before…coincidentally, Diedrich’s #2. Amusing that they’ll be retaking the same space.
Hopefully they’re sticking to having a roaster again, so the smell of coffee will pervade that entire section of Tustin the same way it did 15 years ago.
YEA! finally…we used to go to the location in Orange, on a daily basis. Then after it converted, had to have the beans delivered to our home. We are Diedrich coffee followers and can’t wait until the Tustin location is up. Buy the way, it would be nice to have another “Kean” in Old Town Orange again…
I am so excited to see Kean coffee coming. Ever since Diedrich Coffee left there has been a void. My friends and I love Tustin, we would always meet for coffee in the Morning at Diedrich’s and then head down the street to Rutabegorz for lunch.
Soooo excited. Soooo sick of Starbuck’s. I loved Dietrich’s and can not wait for that spirit to return. My evening dog walks will have a destination!
Can’t wait for good coffee to return to Tustin! (Next stop, Circle at Orange…?) I’m tired of smelling the horrid excuse for coffee served on every corner (two locations in the Orange Circle!?!) Every Diedrich location had an awesome atmosphere, and a real sense of community (like cheers, but without the alcohol). The first time I went to Kean, it was like Deja Vu, only better! Keep up the good work Martin!
Starbucks… what goes around, comes around! With the shift away from big, impersonal chains, the time is right again for smaller, high-quality local merchants like Kean to thrive! More than ever, customers like to go someplace where they are appreciated, and will reward businesses that have higher levels of personal commitment. I hope that the Diedriches will be able to grow to other areas of OC (but not too fast!!)
Keans has the BEST latte I have ever had and all of the employees are friendly, knowledgeable and considerate.
this is great news for coffee lovers!
Welcome back to Tustin.
