Kellogg pulls peanut butter crackers amid FDA probe

Kellogg Co., one of the nation’s largest food manufacturers, has halted sales of Austin and Keebler peanut butter sandwich crackers amid a salmonella outbreak.

The cracker varieties are Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers. Smart  & Final, *Stater Bros. and Fresh & Easy officials said their stores sell some of these crackers. All products have been removed as of Thursday.

The “stop-sale” comes as the Food and Drug Administration probes Peanut Corporation of America. That supplier might be tied to a recent “salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter,” the FDA said in a statement released late Wednesday.

PCA’s peanut paste is used in the Austin and Keebler branded peanut butter sandwich crackers. Kellogg is now asking retailers to stop selling that product, as a safety precaution. No one has been sickened by the products, Kellogg said.

“Consumer health and safety is our top priority,” said David Mackay, president and CEO, Kellogg Company. “We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution.”

It’s unclear if Southern California supermarkets sell the crackers, a snack many children eat at home.  Vons and Ralphs have not responded to requests for comment. Albertsons said the chain does not sell these crackers.  A Fresh & Easy spokesman said the chain had “one product” and removed it from shelves today.  Smart & Final removed the Austin sandwich crackers with peanut butter, and the variety packs from stores today. Stater Bros. also removed the crackers.

The national salmonella outbreak has sickened more than 430 people in 43 states and killed at least five, according to the Associated Press.

Kellogg said consumers with questions or who would like a product refund can call its Consumer Response Center at 888-314-2060.

This item is sold at Smart and Final. Many C-stores sell these crackers.

Hasn’t anyone seen the connection between these “illegals” handling our food and all the illnesses connected with that food? I don’t get that no one sees it. Between the pickers urinating and deficating in the fields to handling the food in the processing centers with their filth, this is why we are all getting sick. It’s time to get rid of these filth and we won’t fall ill by eating what should be safe.

Those corporate snacks aren’t really good for you anyway, so people shouldn’t be eating them. Just buy some simple whole grain crackers and pack some peanut butter whose only ingredients are peanuts and salt and you’ll be fine. I really hate corporate food when it is processed at the nutrional cost to the consumer. A waste of time and money.

    sickandtired,

Stop the nazi thinking, they are humans as you are, you are not superior to them and they are not filth, I bet you they have better morals and are cleaner than you, for people like you there has never been peace in this world, may God bless that confussed mind of yours.

  • Remember, the salmonella outbreak could affect your pet as well. It’s been found in dog biscuits and dog food, where the peanut butter comes from the same plant in Georgia.
