Irvine McDonald’s gets espresso bar, plus Big Mac special

January 13th, 2009, 10:05 am · 12 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Irvine is home to the fifth Orange County McDonald’s serving McCafé specialty drinks.

The brand new McDonald’s recently opened at Orchard Hills Village Center. Address: 3853 Portola Parkway (near Culver Drive.)

Other McDonald’s restaurants serving espresso drinks are in Anaheim, Brea, Cypress and Santa Ana.  Those restaurants were the first in Orange County to start serving the drinks. (LIST of OC McCAFE LOCATIONS)

The specialty coffee, which starts at $2.79, include lattes, mochas and cappuccinos.  Iced coffee and hot chocolate are also available.

The West Coast rollout of McCafes is being watched closely by consumers and retail cafes — including Starbucks. As promised, the drinks served at McDonald’s are less expensive than Starbucks.  In fact, some drinks are lower in price by as much as 66 cents. Other McDonald’s news: Have you seen the Big Mac promotion on TV? For a limited-time McDonald’s is offering two Big Macs for $3.50. For more menu updates, read my New on the Menu section for 2009.

Why not a MacDonald’s Bistro in Irvine? I visited the MacDonald’s Bistro at El Camino Real and Via De La Valle off the I-5 in San Diego and the food was great! Sort of an upscale fast food joint. I’d go there if it were at the Irvine Spectrum!

I tried a hazelnut latte, and an iced hazelnut coffee, but i can’t stand their flavored syrups- they taste like chemicals. Plus, you have to pay for tax, so the 2.79 plus tax small latte isn’t much cheaper than a small hazelnut latte at starbucks for 3.30.

while that big mac special is a good deal… i just can’t get over the last time i had a big mac… so flavorless, dry and bland.

$3.50 for two Big Macs is a good deal?

Last couple I had were cool/cold and dry except for all the sticky goop.

I;ve noticed that mcdonalds big macs are drier now and they dont put as much sauce on them like they used to. You have to ask for extra sauce now and they charge you for it! I watched them put a expresso thingy in the mcdonalds in Fullerton. I wonder how well thats gonna do?

My kids love mcD’s iced coffees. Personally, I think they taste too bitter. I’ll try a frappucinno, though.
We don’t eat hamburger and are tired of eating chicken sandwiches, so we usually just go to McD’s for yogurt and drinks, and a salad now and then.

Can’t wait to try the lattes at Mcdonalds but will wait until they sell them near my house. Big Macs are ok but I like famous stars a little better, for some reason Carls doesn’t seem as processed to me. I can’t remember the last time I had a big mac, they remind me of a cheap version of the Big Boy.

This new McDonald’s is right across the street from my house. We’ve been waiting and waiting for it to open. It is beautiful inside and the play area is large and clean. All around a good move to put one in that spot in Irvine.
Swung by and grabbed a vanilla coffee on the way to the dog park yesterday and…YUM! It was pretty good. Please, don’t tell me how many calories it has–I don’t want to know :)

  • CRB says:

A McDouble is a buck…so for twice the price (on SALE) I can get some sweet goopy gunk? Thanks but no thanks.

  • Catlee says:

The whopper at Burger King is better than a Big Mac. Plus if you go to the Burger King in Tustin by The District during a certain time on the weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday they are $1.49.
