Starbucks now pushing tea

December 31st, 2008, 8:17 am · 9 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Once again, Starbucks (SBUX) is adding more non-coffee drinks to its ever-growing menu.

Starting Jan. 3 (Saturday), Starbucks will debut several new tea options to its menu, including three new tea-based lattes.  Some O.C. cafes are already serving the new teas.

“Most of the tea offerings are less than 200 calories for a tall size (12 fl oz) and most provide more antioxidants than an 8-ounce glass of orange juice, which are essential to protecting the body’s immune system,” the chain said this week.

The Tazo teas are available in three new varieties:

  • Black Tea Latte, a combination of black tea and steamed milk;
  • Vanilla Rooibos Latte, a naturally caffeine-free infusion of botanicals that unites South African rooibos (ROY’-bus), Tahitian vanilla, sweet spices and freshly steamed milk;
  • London Fog Latte, a blend of black tea, citrusy bergamot, French lavender, vanilla and freshly steamed milk.
  • The company will also offer a Berry Chai (shown) Infusion, made with berry and black currant juices, and an Apple Chai Infusion, made with apple juice. That drink is 250 calories, the company said.The latte drinks will be priced between $2.85 and $3.50 for a tall, depending on the location of the store. The infusions will sell for $2.40 to $2.70 for a tall, according to the Associated Press.

      It’s about time!

      Tea is a more civilized drink anyway. Coffee is dark and bitter - a perfect drink for, say, a longshoreman.

      But tea is smoother and more delicate, offers less of a caffeine jolt, and has a beautiful color. We really ought, as Yanks, to be drinking it more often. See you at 4pm.

      Except…. Decent Coffee is HARD to make.

      Decent tea is TRIVIAL to make, one of the few things that is usually better made at home than at restaurants.

      And these dreadful apple and spice infused monsters are not for tea drinkers. They are for the same crowd that likes scented candles.

      I don’t have much to add. I just wanted to try typing a reply here with my pinky pointed up in the air. It’s not that easy.

      I think these lattes sounds awesome - and I love scented candles too

      I love scented candles, and those tea drinks sound awesome.

      I heart the London Fog. Not in the least bit British, but yummy nonetheless. My new drink.

      All the above responses and new products are clearly geared towards the same mindless chicks that sucked down the expensive blended coffee drinks with tons of sugar, thinking they were trend.. Most of these people can’t afford Star$$$ expensive prices so this is just another attempt to diversify with expensive drinks since coffee drinks have petered out.
      More sugar for the thighs, guys- watch ‘em grow.

      Good luck Starbucks.

      If Starbucks really wants to get serious about tea they should get rid of the Tazo brand and educate people about loose leaf teas like what they do at Peet’s. Seriously putting sugary tea powder into a blended drink does’t constitute tea knowledge.
