No more Krispy Kreme at Stater Bros.

November 13th, 2008, 6:35 am · 8 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Krispy Kreme has pulled its doughnuts from Stater Bros.

The exit surprised Stater Bros., which removed the doughnuts at all 165 supermarkets about a month ago. The doughnuts have been replaced with another brand, said Jack Brown, chief executive of the San Bernardino-based grocery chain.

“It’s such a crime, because thy have such a great product. We were the very first chain to bring them here,” said Brown.

Krispy Kreme first landed in Stater Bros. stores six years ago. On the day Krispy Kreme debuted, Brown recalls people lining up at the door at 6 a.m. waiting for the doors to open. The doughnuts have been a familiar product at the chain ever since.

“Customers are disappointed, but they understand it wasn’t our decision,” said Brown.

Krispy Kreme, which has two retail shops in Orange County, has struggled for years as diet trends have changed. According to Convenience Store News, Krispy Kreme has halted deliveries of its doughnuts to various convenience stores because of fuel costs.

This sucks, I used to love getting the rasberry filed at Staters. Oh well, better for my waistline.

replaced with another brand? at the stater bros. i frequent, it looks like house brand. man, are those hideous. i can’t believe a corporate guy said, “it’s such a crime” in reference to this decision. better hope the kk folks aren’t very uptight, because it would be easy to take great offense to a comment like that. i thought those guys were a little more careful about what they say in the press.

gdb: the “it’s such a crime,” comment was meant as compliment, not something offensive.

I never understood the Krispy Kreme 15 minutes of fame. Too much sugar. Gross.

  • Jennifer says:

I tried Krispy Kreme donuts once. They were the worst donuts I’ve ever had. I won’t miss them a bit. But I do miss the donuts they had at the bakery in the Hughes grocery stores.

  • Judith says:

That is really sad. I have diabetes, so I could have maybe a taste of one once in a while. But there are many without diabetes that could still enjoy them once in a while; the whole donut,,, I think they taste delicious.. Reminds me of the donuts my grandmother used to buy me at the Original Farmer’s Market at 3rd and Fairfax in L>A.
