Carl’s Jr. brings back roast beef sandwich

November 12th, 2008, 2:05 pm · 30 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Looks like Carl’s Jr. restaurants have brought back the Roast Beef sandwich.

Carl’s Jr. spokeswoman Beth Mansfield said the sandwich is “a limited time offer in most SoCal locations, not system wide.”

A shout out goes to reader Toni for sending me this tip. Here’s what Toni had to say about the Roast Beef sub’s return:

“Carl’s Jr. has brought back its California Roast Beef sandwich – sliced beef with Ortega chile, tomato and swiss (?) cheese.  I remember those from the 1970s when we first moved back to Orange County.  Although they’re a little pricier now than in the 1970s (they’re 2 for $5 now), they’re still yummy.  Just something about the combination of an Ortega chile with roast beef tickles my taste buds!”

I heard a ad on 92.3 two weeks ago for this. Had one last week - just not the same as when i was younger.

  • Wonginator says:

I didn’t visit Carls Jr as a kid, so I never had the Roast Beef sandwich back then. I love roast beef sandwiches, especially French Dips, so I’ll have to check my local Carls to see if they have it. Must be very new because their latest coupons don’t advertise it, but instead promote the new Big Country breakfast burrito and guacamole bacon burger.

  • Angel Fan88 says:

I used to eat them as a teenager. I just wish they would bring back the Crisp-Burrito. That thing was so tasty! Better than anything the Green Burrito has to offer. They also need to bring back the french fries from that era. There was nothing like them!!

  • BeachBumBob says:

After reading this entry, I just so happen to go to Carl Jr’s for lunch.

1 Didn’t see it yet pictured ID or on the Menu, so I had to ask/describe it at speaker at Drive-thru to see if they actually had it yet

    2. They know it as the “California Roast Beef” special. I order it with a small coke (not sure if it comes in a combo?)

    3. Open the bag and sandwich wrapper and notice a. bun not the same (typical C.Jr hamburger bun with poppy seed) as a Geezer, I reall it was a squatty potato crown bun (i dont think it had poppy seeds?) something like that, I just know that it was a good tasting bun

    4. Roast Beef slices appears to be cut, not shaved (like old time Arbys) with ortega and swiss cheese.

    5. It also came with a slice of tomato, I dont recall the origonals had tomatos

I did find them very tasty, just not a big fan poppy seeds on everything,

Now if they would only bring back their BIG Beefy Hot Dogs, they were very good and tasty.

Gotta try them. I remember them well as a kid. Not expecting them to tast the same as nothing does anyway anymore but should be fun.

  • Eric says:

I wish Carl’s would bring back the chili dog that made them famous!.that hwas the best darn chili dog I’ve ever eaten……..they one day they just stopped…………..argh!

  • yum! says:

Yay! Loved the Roast Beef Sandwich in high school. I’m keeping my fingers crossed to hope that they bring back their Mini Chimichangas and crinkle fries!

  • Cathie says:

YEAH! Im not a big carls fan (HATE THEIR COMMERCIALS) but, when I was a kid I LOVED the roast beef sandwich! Now they just need to bring back the fries! My husband and I try to descibe them to our kids and they just dont get how GOOD they were!!!

  • BeachBumBob says:

Came to revist the comments area and this saw a ad photo for the new Carl’s Jr Calif roast beef sandwich.

    1. Ones I got were not thick or big like the photo

2, Mine came flat and the roast beef was even flatter than a pancake

    3. Still they were tasty

Yes bring back the Carls Jr Chili Dogs

If you like hot dogs, check out this youtube video re: hot dog stands back east. I have eaten at “Boston Speeds” in Boston Mass. He uses Pearl Meats. They are FANTASTIC and yes to do mail order

  • A V Rabinowitz says:

For many years, Hardee’s was known for their various roast beef sandwiches. Is this the same, or a retro of a former Carl’s Jr. menu item?

I don’t believe that Hardee’s offers Roast Beef any longer.

I thought I saw Hot Ham and Cheese on their menu and the old Burger Chef burger, Big Shef. That was at a location in Anoka, Mn back in September.

  • A V Rabinowitz says:

By the way, has anyone notciced that Carl;s Jr. has rasied the price of their Big Burger by 30% to $1.29?

Ever since they added Big Burger to the menu, in lieu of the smaller patties which I beleive were used for the kids meal, this has been the leat expensive Famous Star burger (and still is when compared to the menu price of a regular Famous Star).

The neat part with the Big Burger is that you can tell the order taker to place whatever ingredients on the Big Burger, and my experience has been that lettuce and tomato are available for .15c….the cheapest Famous Star!, even though it’s now $1.29

  • chuck w says:

are they selling these at all locations or just the ones down in the OC?

  • chuck w says:

okay, started to get hungry and decided to make my own version of the cal roast beef….. butterfly the ortega chile, put about four slices of roast beef and grill, add a slice of pepper jack cheese and put on lightly toasted sourdough bread…humm that’s good eating and alot cheaper than fast food………anybody hungry yet? you can use chicken too!

  • kevin says:

    one cal, no ort…

  • darock says:

interesting that this is barely being posted. i tried one out 2 weeks ago at the Carl’s jr by my house on 17th between Grand and Tustin ave. how funny, i didnt know about the roast beef sandwich from back in the day, i just thought that they decided to use up all their ingredients from other sandwiches and make this one up. i say this, because the roast beef tasted more like the beef that they used to top that one burger that they had for a while (what was it? the prime rib burger???) and then they just added the rest of the ingredients. so in short i think they are just doing this promo until they finish up using all the left over prime rib from their failed prime rib six dollar burger.

dont get me wrong, i love me some Carl’s jr!!!!

btw i also thought the sandwich was good and filling.

  • BeachBumBob says:

Darock, you are correct. The old roast beef sandwich had more of a piled of shave roast beef instead of the peppered flat slices that was used for roast beef/hamburger promotion.

It also had a bigger thicker whole (no stem) ortega chili. Yum! they were great!

Now if only Jack in the Box would just bring back the “Bonus Jack” talk about tasty and cheap. (looked kind of a Big Mac style sandwich)

  • Mike says:

Gotta try this burger, I tried the guacamole burger, it was really tasty. Carls is on the cutting edge and they keep me coming back. But please bring back the frispos!!! Best fries of all time. Especially with the little ketchup box. Come on Carls, throw us a bone, at least test them out somewhere. I want my frispos.

  • Dan says:

WOW!!! This tastes exactly the same as I remember it! Very tasty and way better than Arby’s. The meat might even be cut a little thicker and better than it was originally. I always loved these Roast Beef sandwiches, but I wasn’t a big fan of the fries back then. The new one are much better. Thanks Carl’s!

  • Down Jones says:

Is anyone happy about those new fries they sell? I think they’re terrible. It’s actually why I haven’t bothered to go to Carl’s for a few months. I loved he fries back in the 80’s. The ones they were selling before the current ones were ok, but these news ones suck.
The prices have been creeping up as well at Carl’s. Most of the chicken sandwiches are almost $5 each. With fried and a drink it’s over $8. For the money you can’t beat In-n-out best burgers and the prices are less.

  • Melanie says:

This is probably one of the healthiest items on their menu. I LOVE these, and I will definitely have one soon. I wish they would bring them back permanently.

  • Carnivore says:

Thanks, Carl’s … these are great! (Hmm … wonder what one would taste like with a spoonful of guacamole on top?)

  • Steph says:

Ew..It’s all about Portillos in Buena Park. Incomparable! Italian bread, awesome thin slice italian roast beef, cooked hot peppers and dipped in italian ajus style gravy!!! Yum!

  • litlvxn says:

These are definitely not the same as they used to be, but they are better than some of their current burgers. The old ones did not have tomatoes and the chilis were much bigger, nearly covering the entire sandwich. I too loved the chili dogs, especially with that hot pepper sitting on top–yum!!!!! And why they got rid of those crispy fries I’ll never know. My life has never been the same since :)

  • edjusted says:

Yes, I agree with everyone saying Carl’s should bring back their crinkle cut fries. Those were the best!

  • linda says:

    Instant mashed potato fries.

  • bob trujillo says:

Just bought two for $5 and man! Am I in heaven! Just like when I was a kid, eating them brought back so many memories! I am going back for more tomorrow, now if they would only bring back the Charlbroiler Steak Sandwich and the Chili Dog! Slurp!

  • Angela says:

For the person who asked about crisp burritos. I spotted them at a Carls Jr. off of PCH and Western in Lomita.

  • Chrystal Clay says:

Mmmm…I had not had one since I was a teenager. Thanks for the memories Carl’s Jr. The California Roast Beef tasted great!

  • Potato Lover says:

Please bring back the Great Stuffed Potatoes!! They were the best!!

  • Dan says:

I would have to try one of those again. Why didn’t i hear about, I would have all over that. I’m very disappointed. Bring it back again. I promise I will eat them every day. especially if you bring those great ole fries, chili cheese dogs, and the deep fried burritos with all that melted cheese in them. YUMM ! hurry up do it. I’ll be waiting.
