11/11/09 update: McRib is back. CLICK HERE TO READ DETAILS
————————–
So a few readers have pestered me to find out the status of McDonald’s pork and barbecue slathered McRib.
The McDonald’s McRib sandwich randomly pops up in restaurants across the nation. Often it shows up around the holidays or winter months, when diners are looking for a warm hot meal.
The McRib hasn’t been available in Southern California since 2006, according to McDonald’s. Wow. Has it been that long?
“McRib is only available for a limited time and is offered periodically. There is no specific month of the year when it is offered,” according to representatives for Southern California McDonald’s restaurants.
McDonald’s declined to say when, or if, the McRib would make a comeback in Southern California. If you’re a huge fan, hop on a plane and head to Tennessee, Georgia or North Carolina. These regions are apparently offering the McRib right now. For a list of locations, go here.
Tell me: Would you go to McDonald’s more often if it served the McRib?
Write in and let us know your thoughts.
I just got back from Japan and had McRib there, I actually ordered the double McRib sandwich, The equivalent of our value meal, the McRib ’setto’ included a drink and fries cost about 780 yen or almost $8. The flavor was a slightly sweet bbq flavor but lacks the lather of sauce and the pickle we get here, just onions. The wrapper packaging had this funny broken english that made me laugh and I took a photo of it and will post it to my web site later.
Simple answer….don’t eat at McDonald anymore. You’ll live longer.
The McRib has got to be the worst sandwich McDonalds has ever offered……….I wouldn’t eat them if they were 10 for a dollar!
+1 for bob.
Might as well call it the McCoronary.
McDonalds will shorten your lifespan. They have way too high of fat gram content for their small burgers. Shame on them!
I LOVE the McRib!!! The the only time I go there is when they’re offering it. I can’t believe Eric says it’s the worst. I know alot of people that love it as well!
Why don’t they bring back the McDLT?
Check out this McDonald’s ad from back in the 80’s with George Costanza:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTSdUOC8Kac
you can get something similar at any am/pm market for 99 cents.. but just last year MCD’s in GG was serving them, THEY ARE THE BOMB.. but of course anything bad for you always taste better
SIGN ME UP… i love the mcrib!!
The winds of “Rumoria” has it Burger King is developing a barbecued pork sandwich. And will probably name it after a North Carolina race car driver or something like it.
I never liked the McRib. Every time it comes back, I do try it again to see if the recipe has changed, but it always tastes as horrid as before.
I want the original apple pie to come back. The current version has a softer outer texture that has never tasted good. I want the crispy and crunchy outer shell back.
I think the McRib used to be delicious!
But then they switched formulas on the pork patty making it a more fluffy texture like a pork mouse or like a cheap brown and serve breakfast sausage. Perhaps they switched to a softer product so they could just warm it up in the Qing oven (Microwave) instead of grilling it?
The final nail in the coffin was the switch to the dense sweet gummy potato bun, which ruined the whole thing. BBQ is served on fluffy white bread or rolls, not yellow sweet gummy buns.
If they bring back the old McRib patty which had actual chew like hunks of pork, and put it on the old toasted white oval bun…. then I can hardly wait!
I was disappointed by the Japan McRib- it had dressing and lettuce along with the barbecue sauce, and dehydrated onions instead of the fresh ones used here. It was OK but made me even more hungry for the US version. Bring it on McDonalds!
When McDonald’s offers the McRib, my family eats there almost everyday!!!! I worked for McD’s for about 6 years and can honestly say that it is the only sandwich that I miss.
I would go there right now and call my sister along the way. I would buy 2.
Oh, McRib, how I do love thee.
i love the mcrib. i ate them when they 1st came out and i’d buy them left and right. whats wrong with you mickey Ds?
Mc Rib is the most disturbing sandwhich I know! It’s not real meat, and it’s fluffy texture is disgusting.
I remember the farewell tour marketing idea that they ripped from the Simpsons. Yes it’s horrible for you but I find them tasty.
Thank you for posting this blog. I have been wondering about the McRib for the past couple years now. McDonald’s really loves to piss off it’s customers. They always change a good thing, leaving the customers in the dark. I miss the McRib. It is McDonald’s absolute best sandwich EVER! Another complaint I have is how they changed their ranch dressing about a decade ago. They used to make their own ranch dressing, and it was the absolute best!! I mean I could literally drink it out of the pack. lol. Now they outsource it, and it sucks. To hell with them. I refuse to ever eat at McDonald’s again until they bring back the McRib, no joke…
Everyone go to this website, and sign the petition to bring back the McRib…
http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?mcrib12
I scan Fast Food Maven every day hoping for a McRib alert and my heart bounced when I saw today’s post! False alarm, crying shame. I crave these sammies, I obviously don’t care to analyze its contents or nutritional value. The stomach wants what it wants. Don’t the McHaters ever indulge in something they know is not good for them but its satisfaction over-rides all rational thought? Me loves the McRib. I’d marry one, but suppose it would be thwarted by some Prop 8oz….
Please don’t make me move to Tennessee just for love. Bring me my McRibs! I miss them so much.
This sandwhich and the Shamrock shake are the only things that can get McDonalds to get me to open my wallet for them. McDonalds not selling the sandwich makes me feel better since I can not give in to my guilty pleasures.
Thank you for helping my waistline, heart and wallet by no longer offering the McRib.
I don’t think I remember the last time I had one. But if I remember correctly, the sandwich itself was okay, but it had way too much sauce on it. Some is good, drowning is not.
The only reason I would go to McDonald’s is the McRib, the best tasting sandwich on their menu. We have to do something to make the McRib available in Orange County!!!
“wonginator”, if you’re looking for the old style apple pies try the apple pies at Pizza Hut/Wing Street. Not exactly the same, but pretty darn good.
Ohhh…. Shamrock Shake. I forgot all about those. Seemed like the liquid version of a Girl Scout thin mint as I remember.
I haven’t seen them advertised in a few years.
Will they be available again in March?
Please say they will! Pretty PLEASE!
Please McD’s, bring the McRib back. My family and I don’t eat ground beef at all, and my kids are tired of your chicken offerings.
Please get some new food items with the other white meat!
Maybe a shredded pork sandwich?
Change is good!
McRib? What is it really? Segue to Jack-in-the Box, Bonus Jack anybody?
I only go to McDonalds when they have the McRib … so it has been a long time since the last visit. Thanks, Fast Food Maven, for keeping us informed.
Pity me for never have tried the McRib @ McD’s. I can not believe that it has only been 5 years(2003) since they went “all-white” chix meat for the chicken nuggets, which should have been at the very beginning (skimping on quality…”mixed” w/ dark & white meat yuck!). I must say, all of us could make our own “McRib” (too time-consuming?) and our own Shamrock shakes. Just to add, you could buy a Girl Scouts’ Thin Mint Blizzard at Dairy Queen around the time when the GS cookies arrive. I don’t think they are still offering it. That is the BEST ice cream arrangement I have ever tasted.
If McDonald’s offer a McRib (here in the O.C.) I will try it. I wonder if the spokespeople for McD’s feels that there is no real need or desire for a product to sell in this part of the country…hmmmm? It does appear that our favorite fast-food restaurants wants to keep us on our toes when they either change a recipe or pull an item. Perhaps if we write/call/email to these places and request better quality products or to petition to bring back or keep an sandwich or apple (turnover) pies on their menu. We as human beings are ALWAYS on the go and we want something tasty and easy to get and we know it is bad for our bodies and bad for our children and yet we either care little or feel completely guilty later. We can not continue to punish ourselves for the food we desire…we can control our desire to buy fast food every day or every week. I must sound like a broken record or perhaps your parents (or your very slim sister) to say that we do not have to be a “slave” to the industry. There must be a recipe in the Register or on Food Network to help us make our own favorite fast food meals. I happen to have two cookbooks titled “Top Secret Restaurant Recipes” and “More Top Secret Restaurant Recipes” by Todd Wilbur.
Check them out at your favorite book store or your public library.
Thank you Nancy Luna for this update and looking forward to more updates. Thank you readers for letting me share my thoughts with you. Have a very good (healthy) day!
Kevin - supposedly it is pork meat dipped in BBQ sauce reshaped into a rib-form and placed on a bun. That’s the McRib. Many have stated that McD’s changed the sauce recipe and it is not as good when it first came out during the late 1980’s or the 1990’s.
Want a McRib?? Come to Seattle. They are advertising them all over the “McRib is Back!!”
I don’t know if it’s a nationwide promotion, but Wendy’s BBQ-dipped chicken sandwich is alarmingly McRib-like, it’s slathered in sauce and has pickles and onions on it -sound familiar? I love it and encourage any McRib junkie to give it a try while it’s around. Now, I’m off to sign that petition…..
I had the chicken flavor dipped sandwich at Wendy’s the other day and it just made me crave a McRib… but yes I agree they do taste like the McRibs
A friend just told me today (11/14/2008) that she just came from Bakersfield, CA and that they had McRibs down there. I’m thinking “ROAD TRIP!!”
For those who bad mouth McDonalds, there is something called moderation. If you follow in the steps of that idiot Morgan Spurlock, then certainly you will suffer physical setbacks. In moderation, there is nothing wrong with McDonalds.
McDonald burgers, sandwiches, and the rest of the menu is nothing but junk, except for the apple turnover (which by the way used to taste better) and the Fruit ‘n Yogurt Parfait with Granola.
I never buy anything else at McDonald’s because not only does the food tastes awful, but it’s got to be the unhealthiest food of all the fast food joints.
I LOVE THE MCRIB, i would eat there once a week if they brought the mcrib back to san francisco!!!!
With over 450 calories, and 24 grams of fat, im sure ALL of you can find something else to satisfy those cravings. The McRib should be called the McIntestine-tail-and-other-unimaginable-things. I don’t like McDonalds, Burger King, or many of the other fast food chains.
As a graduated senior fresh out of high school, you may consider me a little too young to be picking battles with McDonalds or any other fast food chain, but after I lost 70lbs and changed my lifestyle, i realized just how badly the fast food industry is ruining kids’ eating habits.
I know i can’t DIRECTLY blame Mcdonalds (or any other chain), because they do have some decent snacks if you have absolutely no other option. Apples, and Yougurt w/ granola seem to be the few “acceptable” items on the menu, but with hard times, and a draining economy, I see more and more people sacrificing their health and bodies with $.99c cheeseburgers and such, because most of their finances are being used to make ends meet.
I find it sad and tragic that the programs offered at schools don’t cover 1/4 of the knowlege used on a daily basis concerning nutrition. If you don’t believe me, i pose this querstion to you: what is aspartame, and where can you find it? how does it affect your body?
ask your kids. see if they can tell you off of the top of their heads.
im sure every one of you reading this has had aspartame within the past week. But im not sure that you know the FDA put “DEATH” as a side effect of aspartame.
i think it’s time for the schools to teach more valuable information, and more topics concerning “the everyday meal”. and if they wont, it’s my campaign to do so.
Wu, can you recite the FDA “death” data, to back up such a big claim?
Thanks, Nancy
No problem Nancy

Death should be 16 up from the bottom of the list of side effects reported. Hallucinations, shock, and a few other really bad things are on there as well.
I miss the McRib… Bring it back, Bring it back!!!
McRib is the only sandwich I go to McDonald’s for. No McRibs sandwich - no business from me and my family.
I hear they’re available in Vegas now. I eat @ McDonald’s maybe once every 3-4 months… but when the McRib is back, it’s a whole different ballgame.
Same here. I go to McD’s once every couple of months. The last time the MCRIB was here, I was eating them every other day or more.
Bring it back permanently.
I check out the McRib Locator (http://kleincast.com/maps/mcrib.php) daily to see if any restaurant close to me has them. Mind you, “close to me” in my case means within 4 hours drive. I would drive 4 hours and bring a friend to spread the goodness that can only be expressed by the McRib.
But a question has arisen: I order my McRib without pickles. Am I a blasphemer? Have I bastardized the glorious food of the gods?
That being asked, if McD’s had McRib and either Arctic Orange or Mountain Raspberry shakes, I would never have to eat anywhere else.
The McDonald’s inside Buffalo Bill’s (Primm, NV) had them last week. YUM!
Definitely would eat there more…only go to McD’s when the Mc Rib’s in town. Needless to say, it’s been awhile. When anyone in the family hears it’s coming we have to call everyone else! We love it!
When McRib is in town that is the only reason I make a trip. Wish they had them year round. Are you listening McDonalds?????
I love the McRib…it is in VA…but not here in WV….why I don’t know….that is my fave sandwich…the rest I really don’t like! So listen up McD’s and give us consumers what we want now…I would like them year round myself!
Since I almost never eat McDonalds food I guess I am not the guy to ask. But I have always wondered what the fascination was with the McRib sandwich. Many years ago when they were still being offered in SoCal I tried one. It was by far one of the worst fast food sandwiches I have ever eaten. So when they disappeared I wasn’t surprised.
