Updated 1 p.m. to include comment from Togo’s on price increase
As the popularity of better-for-you foods continues, Togo’s said today that it would serve only natural chicken in its 253 restaurants.
The new chicken is free from any artificial flavor, coloring, chemical preservatives or any other artificial or synthetic ingredient, the company says. The menu change will affect eight menu items, including the Chicken, Sicilian Chicken, BBQ Chicken and Chunky Chicken Salad sandwiches. Natural chicken will also be served on these salads and wraps: Santa Fe Chicken, Cobb, Asian Chicken and Roasted Chicken Caesar.
“A lot of consumers told us they want better for you foods,” said Togo’s Chief executive Ton
y Gioia of the switch to natural chicken.
But, will it come at a higher price?
Gioia says consumers can expect a slight price increase for chicken-based menu products. The amount of the increase is up to the franchisee, he said.
The move comes as more food retailers ratchet up organic and natural food offerings to meet consumer demand. According to market research firm Packaged Facts, 2008 sales of natural and organic food and beverages are projected to reach $32.9 billion.
In the fast-food industry, Chipotle Mexican Grill has become a leader in offering natural and organic foods.

Update: I tried the Togo’s all-natural meat in a wrap the other day. It was tasty, and definitely high quality. Not sure, however, if I could really tell the difference.
