Albertsons to shoppers: order online & pick up at curb

October 15th, 2008, 6:36 am · 6 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Albertsons delivery truckAlbertsons is launching a campaign to push online grocery ordering — including an option to pick up groceries curbside.

Orange County’s largest traditional grocery chain has offered online ordering since 1999, but has done little to promote the service.

Starting this week, Albertsons plans to push online grocery shopping by telling consumers via household mailers that Internet ordering can help save money on their skyrocketing food bill.

How so?

When ordering online, Albertsons officials say the web site “automatically ” gives customers the lowest price on food items. Also, online shopping often means less impulse buying, which can add up at the cash register.

Still, the service comes at price. The charge for home delivery is $12.95 and $5.95 for store pick-up. To order groceries, visit the Albertsons web site, and enter your zip code. Vons, by the way, also offers online grocery shopping. (Go here to shop)

What do you think? Is this a good way to save money and time?

When you let the store pick your groceries they will probably be the smashed boxes/cans and bruised fruit that everyone else picks over.

I found out something when I was at an Albertsons in New Mexico. Only Albertsons in California have the “preferred customer” cards for discounts on groceries. Other Albertsons outside of Calif., have discounted prices for everyone who shops there. This is convenient way for Albertsons to get a higher price for groceries for those who haven’t signed up for “preferred”. Why doen’t Albertsons drop this practice if tehy are looking to increase revenue?

As far as curbside appeal, that takes all of the fun out of people watching at the store!!!

I enjoy going to the store, it’s only once a week for us and we can get all our essentials. To me, the online ordering is MUCH more expensive and they don’t list the same deals. Also, like the other person mentioned, going into the store gives you the opportunity to pick the produce and products that look best to you.

I have ordered from Albertsons many times! Right after having my first child and being in an upstairs apartment, it was the only choice I had other than to make my poor husband go to the grocery store along with is already huge to-do list. The delivery guys are very nice and everything is always right! Butcher block, deli and produce is always good quality.

If you know exactly what you want and don’t comparison shop, online shopping is the way to go. But for me, half of my shopping is for items I know I want, while the other half is impulse shopping of what may be on sale that week, or what catches my eye when I’m browsing the shelves.

I find browsing online to be difficult, while browsing at a store is much more enjoyable, if I’m looking for a new brand of cookies or chips to try out, or a new salad dressing flavor to try. And I don’t trust anyone else to pick out fresh ripe fruit for me, especially for fruit which I can now identify ripe versions with high accuracy.

I guess if you’re strapped for time, maybe ordering online is quicker. But do you really save much time ordering online if you have a good-sized order of groceries of 30 items or more? That would probably take about an hour at the store. I’ve never ordered 30+ items from anywhere online before, but I think it would take some time if I did, close to the hour I would spend at the store.

I don’t think that is a great idea. Their prices are too high now.
I love the stores, they are always clean and the people that work there are great. I don’t go there, however, as much as used to.
I now go to the Grocery Outlet on Magnolia and Warner. It is almost as good as Aldi’s, but not near as good as Walmart Super Center. I save so much money. I do go to Albertsons for a few things that I can’t get at the Grocery Outlet. I will not buy anything at the Cvs pharmacy inside the store, OMG, talk about ridiculous prices.
