25-cent In-N-Out anniversary burger a hoax

For the past two days, the fast food world has been abuzz as rumors spread via emails and blogs that In-N-Out Burger would celebrate its 60th birthday by selling 25-cent hamburgers on Oct. 22.
I’ve been trying to confirm the details for two days, and finally learned today that the birthday burger bash deal is a hoax. Here’s what the Irvine-based chain posted on its Web site early Wednesday:
October 22nd Discounting Rumors
You may be aware of a rumor about our menu prices being lowered for our anniversary on October 22nd. This rumor is untrue. We’ve always tried to keep our prices as low as possible in order to give our customers the greatest value. One of the ways we accomplish this is by not discounting and our anniversary is no exception. We’re sorry if this rumor (or hoax) has caused any confusion.
–
What is true?
Yes, In-N-Out is turning 60 on Oct. 22. The company is celebrating the occasion privately with employees. That’s it. No special deals or freebies, said Executive Vice President Carl Van Fleet, whom I talked to this morning after trying to reach him for two days.
Van Fleet, who acts as the main spokesman for the publicity-shy chain, said the company’s customer service line fielded several calls about the rumor over the last two days — prompting him to post the hoax warning on the Web site. Some reports also said cheeseburgers would sell for 30 cents, fries 15 cents and drinks 10 cents.
“We haven’t the slightest idea how this got started, (but) we’re trying to put this thing to bed,” said Van Fleet, who heads the chain’s planning and development division.
A blunt Van Fleet also said that In-N-Out would never consider such a discount because, frankly, “it would be a miserable experience” for customers who’d have to wait in longer lines to get a burger.
“We just don’t do that,” he added.
I didn’t think so, either.
Anyway, now’s a good time to wish In-N-Out a big “Happy Birthday.”
Please post any memories you have of eating at the chain here. I know my greatest memory is taking an exclusive tour of the Baldwin Park plant, where I learned the magic of making the perfect beef burger. Read that story here.

This is B.S. I can’t wait until Obama is president so he can force in and out to sell burgers for 25 cents to us who cant afford it.
October 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
You’ll have to wait a long time for that to happen because Obama won’t be president this year. Or next year. Or the year after that. I don’t really see him being president at any time. In-n-Out burgers are already pretty low in cost. Great burgers!
October 8th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Dude, the lines at In-N-Out are usually already long as it is.
October 8th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I think In-N-Out really should take up this discount since everyone’s hopes are up already…
October 8th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
thank you In-N-Out for your wonderful bugers and fries. Keep up the good work. Just a thought, You should have a In-N-Out stand at Dodger Stadium.
GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Burgers & Fries
October 8th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I’m glad this rumor is untrue. Imaging the lines? The drive thrus would be a mess, spilling out into the streets. I would rather pay the few extra bucks than wait two hours in line. It’s pretty cheap as it is.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I would simply avoid In N Out on those days that they would have a promotion like that. I went to McDonalds on the day that they offered the free breakfast chicken sandwiches. The near-miss car accidents in the parking lot and the 15 minute lines waiting to order the food were more stress than the sandwiches were worth.
I read that the lines at Philippe’s a few days ago for the 10 cent French Dips were at least 1.5-2 hours.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
how sad, I was looking forward to it!
October 8th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Uncle Bill, you are totally ridiculous!
October 8th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
A Hoax, WHAT!!! I’ve been waiting in line for the past few days so that I could be in line for the 25Cent burgers!! I too hope Obama wins, he would not put up with this on bit and make them sell for the correct 25 cent price!
October 8th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I was getting ready to feed the hungry/homeless.
October 8th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
HBrider,
You are right! I can bet 100-1 that never happens in my life time (still 100 years to go). Although this election is very close, but all polls are just fake.
October 8th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
This was to be a forum for In&out burgers, not to bash our soon to be President. All you haters out there are in for a treat. Just keeping it real and I do believe you know that its truth.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
At least give us FREE Animal style!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Chicken,
I’ll take your 100-1 bet. Put me down for $100. When Obama wins, I’ll be $10,000 richer. Who wants double doubles? I’m buying on Nov. 5.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
if In N Out had burgers for $0.30 I would buy like 20!!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
An in n Out Stand at dodger Stadium!!!! Heaven!!! double double and a dodgers dog!!!!!mmmmmm
go Dodgers!!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Uncle Bill is correct. In-N-Out should CHANGE their burgers. We need CHANGE, we need HOPE. What CHANGE you say??? I don’t know, we just need CHANGE.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Who cares?
Everybody knows Tommy’s has better burgers!
Tommy’s is also celebrating their 60th anniversary.
Chili-cheeseburger with everything, chili-cheese fries, and a bucket of soda…YUM!
October 8th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I just heard in the news that Obama becoming a president is also a hoax!!!
October 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
uncle bill did you know that In and out was going to make an Obama burger but they can’t sell camel meat in the US
October 8th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
damn i would have stocked my whole fridge with burgers
October 8th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
For the sake of its anniversary celebration, In-n-Out can still offer the discounted burgers and drinks, say maybe between the hours of 10:30am - 1:00pm, or 1:30pm - 4:00pm .
October 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
I think uncle bill was being sarcastic. I do love those burgers, though.
October 8th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
It’s so stupid, because even if they were selling burgers cheap for one day, the lines would be so long that it wouldn’t be worth it to wait. I can’t believe how stupid people are to spend there time actually waiting in line, for hours, so they can save a few bucks.
Now when is this special?
October 8th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
burger king rules….
October 8th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
In n out does not need to sell the burgers for 25 cents anyways. The burgers are already great value.
October 8th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Hey lets just vote for him cause he’s black, ya he will give us free hamburgers…… loosers… He is only black when it is convenient for him by the way….. kinda like they only pulled u over because you werent white. Not that you heard the sirens over the radio or noticed the flashing lights right away because you were groovin in your car and all over the road so cant really pay attention to mirrors or whats going on behind u. By the way in and out is cheap enough as it is. Lower the prices more and then the line there will just be as long as the line at the unemployment and welfare centers. Hey I guess for some they are already used to it though.
October 8th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
oh man,,,, i called my friends and invited them for burgers on oct 22,>> as if am gana pay the full price for all 8 of them,>>> MAN a least put some discount
the 60th birthday will never be back again
October 9th, 2008 at 12:34 am
chicken, i’ve got twenty bucks to those odds.
go to in n out and order the animal style fries, on the right night they’re better than sex. lol
October 9th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Anyone ever wonder why the lines are always long? They do it on purpose. Yes, the food is good and a lot of people agree, that’s why people continue to eat there, but you know darn well they could shorten those lines. They have 2 or 3 grills depending on location to pump out more burgers when necessary. Go around 12-12:30 when the line has 25 or more cars in it and take a look at how many grills are being used. I bet you a million dollars that 1 maybe 2 are being used. They specifically do not light up the 3rd grill because they want the line to be long. They want people to drive by and say “Wow, that must be a good place to eat, just look at the line.”
October 9th, 2008 at 8:27 am
I think HBrider needs to make sure they know what they are talking about before they post comments for people a mass number of people to see them. Of course, IF Barack Obama does not become president this TERM, he will not be elected president next year, or the year after that! DUH!! Presidential terms are FOUR years. WOW this is what is wrong with our country!
October 9th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Peter Rules!
October 9th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
The In&Out on 19th street in costa mesa always under cooks their burgers. Avoid that one. My memories of In&Out are staying in line too long for a burger that I could not eat. Other locations are good though.
As for all this Obama talk, I feel left out. I have not heard anything about his stance on burgers.
October 9th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I can’t believe I fell for this one. I despise anyone that forwards me some chain letter about a kid that needs desperate help, Disnland deal with tix if you forward a lame email to 10 friends or Bill Gates giving $1,000 to the first 100 people….blah, blah, blah!
I can’t stand getting those chain emails and for the most part, I haven’t seen them in some time.
I fell for this one…sorry to all that I forwarded too.

Burger BAILOUT!!!
October 18th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Uncle Bill (the first poster in this thread) nailed it right on the nose.
If, God forbid, B. Hussein Obama becomes president, the Socialist policies that he, Reid, and Pelosi will force upon all hard-working, honest, responsible Americans, will take 2-3 elections and 1-2 decades to undo, IF this nation remains free that long!
October 21st, 2008 at 11:53 pm
HBRIDER N CHICKEN U TWO SOUND RIDICULOUS, AND WAKE UP YOUR JUS AS RETARDED FOR CHIMMING IN. ITS SAD HOW AMERICANS JUST CANT STICK TOGETHER.

If you can’t afford In-n-Out Burgers, maybe you should get a job, or @ least find a better one….
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:21 pm
HBrider, you are a fat idiot. Thank god that you don’t know what you are talking about.
October 24th, 2008 at 3:38 am
I must admit, my last IN & OUT experience was horrible. The natural fries tasted like last weeks. The double cheeseburger left alot to be desired. That’s it for me.
