Del Taco creates 5-story ‘taco sign’ near freeway

October 7th, 2008, 2:19 pm · 14 Comments · posted by Nancy Luna, Staff Writer

Today, Del Taco debuted its first ever “wall scape” — a five-story tall image of the chain’s new Classic Taco that Los Angeles commuters can see from the northbound (I-405) freeway near the (I-10).

The taco is new to the Lake Forest chain’s value menu. (Read about Del Taco’s Classic Taco & its new  grandma stripper pole ad)

“A billboard just wasn’t big enough to show off our new Classic Taco,” said Sharon Fogg, Del Taco’s senior vice president of marketing. “This 5-story image looks like the Classic Taco is breaking right through the building’s windows. This should definitely grab the attention of hungry commuters and steer them to the nearest Del Taco.”

Del Taco expects the sign (shown above) to be visible to 285,000 daily commuters.

Here is the issue I have with this; the taco looks nothing like the picture. What I get when I order this taco is a thin, joke of a taco. You could actually count on one hand the strands of cheese on the taco. I had a tiny, one square of tomato and the beef didn’t even fill the shell from end to end. The only thing classic about this taco is the let down it promises. The billboard can be 20 feet high and I would still not order this taco again. Also, this company should know that the locals want to see something pleasing to the eye. A picture of a 5 story tall taco is not very pleasing. I would even call it sight pollution. Thanks Del Taco!

I would like the name and phone number to the old lady in the stripper pole commercial, i would knock the bottom out of that azz.

  • HBrider: I just had this conversation earlier with another reader. We all agree — house ads/photos never look like the real thing when it comes to food.

  • MrClean says:

It’s random - and when you have low wage workers, what do you expect.

You people are very silly.. you want the cheap price, but the expensive quality.

  • Carnivore says:

MrClean ~ HBRider is right … it’s deceptive advertising to show a ‘’stuffed” taco such as on the billboard, no matter what price. I’ve never seen a taco that looked like this at any fast-food restaurant.

  • Ocbased says:

What is everyone doing anyway eating at fast food restaurants? That is gross, and you should be more concerned about your health and excercising than eating at heart-attack-waiting-for-me restaurants.

  • hbdude says:

    I want a taco.

  • Blah says:

Why? It’s only 200 calories. People in their main target audience who are already at their ideal weight could probably eat 12 a day and actually be at risk of losing weight. The real weight killers are large portion restaurants, a pattern of excessively large meals at home, desserts, high calorie drinks, and the wrong kind of snacks.

  • Bob Wilson says:

MrClean and Ocbased are correct. The next time you visit Phoenix, here’s a place that’s neither cheap nor healthy but you will get the most bang for your buck: the Heart Attack Grill. Order the Quad-Bypass burger (over 2 pounds, 8000(!) calories) and Flatliner fries (cooked in pure lard). Waitresses are dressed like nurses and wheelchairs are lined up by the door to carry you out to the paramedic van afterward.

  • Eating Fool says:

All companies are allowed to puff their products and this is well settled law going back many decades and it’s an old song and dance routine to complain mightily about it.

The ads say the Classic taco has twice the meat and cheese of the regular one so I’d say that’s where the real bitching should be if it isn’t proven true. I don’t weigh them but the Classic certainly has more meat in it to my untrained eye although the cheese looks a little skimpy. The cheese portion can’t practically be weighed as much as it’s tossed on in the assembly line of fast food.

  • Christian says:

When I got one of these it was actually a lot like the picture.

And when I worked fast food I did everything I could to make the food I made “look like the picture,” even when management told me to make it quick and crappily.

  • Ocbased says:

Blah, I don’t think Del Taco’s main target audience are at their “ideal weight.” The demographic for fast food restaurants are not people who are too concerned with their health or diet, but more concerned with time and convenience, thus willing to hit up a Del Taco. Its not about the calorie count either. Calories are easy to burn. Just jump on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Its the food and what in it, how they cook it, the lack of freshness, lack of proper nutrients for the body, etc.

  • strawberry says:

Never had a problem with Del Taco, ever. Sure, they skimp out on the ingredients in the tacos sometimes, but its’ fast food - what do you expect? If it bothers you that much, ask for extra lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Oh, and ocbased, go eat a hamburger. No one is going to listen to you here. Oh, nevermind, just go eat some tofu instead. I’m sure you have NEVER EVER gone to a fast food joint at the last minute because you were hungry or poor.
