Papa John’s baking whole wheat pizza

One of my favorite small pizza chain’s in California is Woodstock’s Pizza.
I love it for several reasons: ingredients are fresh and the pizza sauce is stuffed in the folded-over crust. The menu also offers a whole wheat pizza option. Every time I travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., I always make a “whole wheat pizza pitstop” at Woodstock’s. (There’s also a Woodstock’s near the campus of UC Santa Barbara.)
The pizza tastes so much better — and I’ve always wondered why the major pizza chains never offered a whole wheat option. Now, with consumers craving healthier meal choices — even fast-food foodies — Papa John’s said it will introduce today a whole wheat pizza.
The 2,700-unit chain said it is the first national pizza chain to add a 100 percent whole-wheat crust to its menu. One large slice of cheese pizza on the whole-wheat crust will contain fewer calories and 2.5 times more fiber than a regular Papa John’s pizza, the company said.
According to a 2007 a survey of 450 pizzeria operators, Papa John’s said only 7.7 percent of pizzerias offer whole-wheat crust. Most chains said that it is growing in popularity.
Do you know of any small Southern California chains that offer whole wheat pizzas? If so, write in and let us know. I’ll be giving the whole wheat Papa John’s pizza a test drive soon — so stay tuned for my review.

OMG, I used to love Woodstocks for years, and would occasionally drive 100+ miles just to eat it. However, I now have an amazing new favorite wheat crust place…
Pizza Port (pizza port) - Around the San Diego area, but the furthest north is San Clemente. AMAZING wheat crust pizza, very much in the Woodstocks style, but get this - they make the BEST beer there as well (and I normally HATE microbrews). This place rocks - you will NOT be disappointed. After 15 years of Woodstocks runs, I don’t even think of them anymore….
Not as good, but there’s an OC chain called Z-pizza that does wheat as well. Oh, and you can get wheat at California Pizza Kitchen.
